There are 30 NBA teams. Obviously each team has cap space for at least one max contract player. The question is whether there are truly 30 players "worthy" of a max contract.

That’s why they need to get rid of max contracts. Disperse the superstars. The league would be much more fun to watch in my opinion.

    Kind of topical.

salaries of the top earners in each NBA team compare to their teams' total salaries

Note there may be a correlation how strong a team is.
Also note, data is from 2018.

Typo above. I meant the data is only up to 2018.

As to your question, according to Wikipedia.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_salary_cap
    it says
    """
The league continued to operate without such a cap until 1984–85 season, when one was instituted in an attempt to level the playing field among all of the NBA's teams and ensure competitive balance for the League in the future.
    """

Oops.. I read your question as 1984-85.. and not 1994 :)

    Holy Balls

in the 1996-1997 season Michael Jordan's salary alone nearly doubled Vancouver's entire rosters salary.

    Grizzlies total team salary:$15,978,000
    Michael Jordans salary: $30,140,000

If memory serves me right Steve refused to play for any team outside of USA, his grief wasn't over anything salary related.
