Thank you very much HTM. It’s been so exciting to watch him grow as a player, and to realize that he may have a future in the NBA. He obviously still has a lot in front of him, but I believe he definitely has the foundation to do it

Rosga scores 22 points, Denver defeats Wyoming 90-87 in OT

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Joe Rosga scored 22 points and made four consecutive free throws in the final nine seconds of overtime to help Denver defeat Wyoming 90-87 on Tuesday night.

After Wyoming's Justin James made two free throws to tie it at 84 in the final minute of overtime, Donoven Carlisle put the Pioneers back ahead with an offensive putback with 21 seconds remaining. Rosga twice made a pair of free throws after missed 3-pointers by Wyoming, giving Denver a 90-84 lead. Wyoming's Jake Hendricks made a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

Tory Stewart-Miller added 10 points for Denver (4-7) and his eight rebounds helped the Pioneers to a 44-23 rebounding advantage. Ade Murkey scored 17 points and Ronnie Harrell Jr. had 15.

Hendricks scored 27 points for Wyoming (3-7) and made seven of the Cowboys' 11 3-pointers. James added 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists. James played all 45 minutes and Hendricks 43.

Denver took its first lead at 27-25 midway through the first half and held it until James made two free throws with 25 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 72 heading to overtime.

    vs. East Tennessee State University

    12/21/2018 | 5 p.m.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 11, 2018) – The Wyoming Cowboys battled back from a 14-point deficit to force overtime, but the Denver Pioneers went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line in the extra session to take the contest 90-87. Junior Jake Hendricks and senior Justin James combined for 53 points to lead the Cowboys. James now has 1,600 career points ranking eighth all-time at Wyoming.

"I admire the fight from our guys, with the five guys we had at the end," Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards said. "But I still think our fight could have been better on the defensive end. We gave up baskets at key moments of the game. Those moments are when you have to win the game on the defensive end of the floor.

Both teams exchanged blows in overtime with the contest being tied five times during the period. Denver's Donoven Carislie added a tip-in bucket with 21 seconds left and Joe Rosga added four free throws to seal the win for the Pioneers. It marked the first overtime loss for Edward and the Cowboys since December of 2016 against No. 23 USC. Wyoming had won seven-straight overtimes under Edwards.

"I kept it very simple with our guys after the game -- rebounding and free throws hurt us," Edwards said. "They (Denver) got 13 offensive rebounds, and they knocked down their free throws, going 15 of 15. For us from the free-throw line, counting the front ends of 1-and-1s that we missed, we were only 12 of 22 in converting opportunities we had at the free-throw line."

Hendricks hit a career-high seven three pointers to finish the game with a career-best 27 points. His seven triples were the most by a Cowboy since Jason McManamen hit seven on Feb. 8, 2017. He shot 67 percent from the field on the night. James added 26 points grabbing eight rebounds and five assists. James has scored 20 or more points in all but one game this season. He scored 20 of his points in the second half and overtime.

Redshirt freshman Hunter Thompson tied a career-high with 15 points. He went 6-of-12 from the field and added two assists. Sophomore Hunter Maldonado added 10 points and four rebounds going 4-of-7 from the field. He left the game in the second half with an injury.

The Pokes shot 53 percent from the field on the night for a season-high. The Pioneers shot 50 percent for the game and were a perfect 15-of-15 from the free throw line. Wyoming hit a season-high 11 three pointers and have hit double-digit threes in three-straight games.

"It was also more about our defense than our offense," Edwards said. "We shot 53 percent from the field, 48 percent from three, but we gave up 50 percent shooting to them and 39 percent from the three to go with their 100 percent from the free-throw line. It was more about not imposing our will on the defensive end of the floor and not rebounding the basketball."

The Cowboys opened the game a perfect 5-of-5 from the field to race out to a 13-6 advantage. The Pokes did it in all phases. James added two assists on triples from Hendricks and Thompson. James also added an alley-oop dunk.

Hendricks was mister efficiency in the first five minutes of the ball game. He was 4-of-4 from the field with two steals with fast break layups to make it an 18-11 contest. He also added his second-straight triple to make it a 10-point game at 21-11.

The Pioneers would go on an 11-2 run to make it a 23-22 contest with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half. A three-pointer by Rosga would give the Pioneers their first lead of the game at 27-25 with 9:43 left in the first half.

The Pioneers hit their fifth three of the game, as Taelyr Gatlin's triple gave Denver a 36-30 advantage with 6:35 left in the opening frame. Denver would later add the lead to eight points at 48-39 with under two minutes left on another Rosga three pointer.

That would be the score going into the half, as the Pokes shot 59 percent from the field with the Pioneers shooting 54 percent. Denver got it done with eight offense rebounds turning those into 10 second chance points.

The Pioneers opened the second half moving the lead to 14 points in the opening minutes. Wyoming cut it to a seven point game, Hendricks hit back-to-back threes for a 60-53 game with 14:24 left. James added a fast break dunk to cap an 8-0 Wyoming run to make it a five point game at 60-55 with 12 minutes left.

Wyoming would cut the deficit to four points at 65-61 thanks to Thompson, as his four-straight points put the Pokes in the hunt with 6:40 remaining. Wyoming would cut it to one-point at 68-67 with 3:55 on a smooth layup from James on a nice dish from A.J. Banks. But it was cut short on and and-one from Ade Murkey to push the lead back to four points.

The Pokes would get defensive form their holding the Pioneers scoreless for the final 3:35 of regulation. Wyoming tied the contest with a pair of free throws from James with 25 seconds remaining to send the game to extra time.

Rosga led the Pioneers in scoring with 22 on the night. He went 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Ade Murkey added 17 points with Ronnie Harrell Jr. adding 15 and Tory Stewart-Miller adding 10.

The Cowboys will return to action on Dec. 21 at the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso, Texas. The Pokes open up play against East Tennessee State in a contest set for a 5 p.m. start.

UW men’s basketball goes above and beyond for community service

From reading to elementary school kids to partaking in community celebrations in Laramie and around the state to playing softball with local firefighters and law enforcement officers to players and coaches taking members of the Laramie and UW communities to lunch on campus, there is a good chance you’ve seen the Cowboys out and about a lot over the last year.

Community service is nothing new for UW basketball. Coach Allen Edwards was an assistant with the Cowboys from 2011-16 for Larry Shyatt, and UW did its share back then.

But now, in his third year as head coach, Edwards and the Cowboys have been doing more.

“We’ve always done it. Coach Shyatt just was big on not publicizing it,” Edwards said. “My first few years, that was my approach because you do it because that was what you’re supposed to do.

“Because it is a different era now, and how social media works, you are trying to engage the community and student body.”

To do that, UW is out among the people. It isn’t a new idea or approach, and the men’s basketball team isn’t the only sports program at UW that does this.

But it does a lot, and for Edwards, it goes back to when he was growing up in Miami.

“I used to always get excited meeting a Miami Heat player, or the University of Miami basketball players,” Edwards said. “Those things spoke volumes to me, and I remember how I felt.”

Edwards also has been on the other side of it. As a basketball player at Kentucky, where the Wildcats won two national championships while he was there, basketball was – and still is – the biggest show in town. People not only packed Rupp Arena for games, they took every opportunity possible to see or interact with the players.

“You have people crying when they meet you,” Edwards said. “Even today, I still see people who talk about when I met them when I played there. I have no clue who they are, but it stays with me.

“That was the message to our guys – you don’t understand how that type of stuff impacts people’s lives, but at the same time, how much it impacts your life. That’s the sales pitch you have to give kids these days because they have so much going on in their lives. You’re taking more of their time.”

Things haven’t gone well for the Cowboys on the court. Injuries, suspensions and attrition have led to a sub-.500 record and a 2-4 record at home. UW lost four times at home all of last season. Conference play begins next week, so the road won’t get any easier.

But in terms of that sales pitch Edwards described that he and his staff give to players to be involved within the community and state, the players have bought in.

“It has definitely meant a lot, and as the years go on, you appreciate it more,” senior guard Justin James said. “You see the same faces after the games, the same faces walking around in the stores. Having people come up and say ‘I’m glad you did this for us’ makes you value all the people that care about us and this university.”

UW has seven first-year players on its roster this season. Everything is new to them on the court, and so is their community service work.

“It is a great feeling, and it is humbling,” true freshman guard Tariq Johnson said. “You see people young and old. They know your name. Sometimes it is a little overwhelming, but to see the smiles on kids’ faces and see all the great fans, I love doing it.”

Edwards said he and his staff have to be careful what they do and when they do it in terms of their already-busy schedules, but added if there is enough notice and planning, he will do what he can to get himself and his team out there.

After UW’s two games at the Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso, Texas, this weekend, Edwards said the players will go home for a few days before coming back to campus to get ready for their final nonconference game Saturday at home against Division II Dixie State.

Jerron Granberry played for UW during the 2013-14 season. He was a graduate assistant the previous two seasons, and is a special assistant for Edwards this season. Granberry plans and organizes most of UW’s community service activities.

It took a while to go over the list of activities and events the Cowboys attended this year. Then, Granberry said: “What more can we do to get back out there? It is not an obligation, but something we should want to do. We’re not doing it to get you in the stands. We’re trying to teach these kids to be decent people over their lifetime.”

But there are challenges. As Edwards said earlier, in the era of Twitter, Facebook and numerous other things that have people’s attention, getting fans to come to games is harder than ever. Not just at UW, but throughout the country in college basketball.

But more importantly to Edwards and his basketball team, it is about engaging with people face-to-face.

That’s why UW recently started having players and coaches take someone to lunch on campus once a month. It could be a student, professor, university employee or someone in the community.

“The reason behind that is there’s so many online classes and there are so many people who take them who never go on campus,” Edwards said. “That was the beauty of college back in the day – hanging out at the student union was a big deal. A lot of this generation doesn’t do that.

“It also is a way the players can introduce themselves to classmates, the student body and be a part of campus life. I think that’s missing in this day and age.”

Edwards remembers growing up in Miami and seeing athletes he looked up to. He said adults now may not feel that way when seeing UW players, but their kids do. And if it is not about the kids, it is a chance for Edwards’ players to see that some people live completely different lives than they do.

Yes, there is frustration over the struggles that have occurred on the court, but there are a lot of people out there who have bigger concerns.

“For our guys, they get to talk to people who had a different walk in life,” Edwards said. “Everyone has a story, and sometimes as young people they think they are the only one with a story. That opens their eyes when see people going to a shelter to get food when they’ve always been provided for."

Young’s Debut a Memorable One in Cowboy Win Over Dixie State, 65-63

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 29, 2018) – True freshman Trace Young hit a game winning three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left to lift Wyoming to a 65-63 win over Dixie State on Saturday afternoon in the Arena-Auditorium. Making his collegiate debut on his birthday, Young scored 16 points and made the first and the last bucket of the contest. The 63 points allowed was the lowest by the cowboys this season.

"The best thing was the games was in the 60s and not in the 80s, and that was the way we wanted to play," Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards said. "I think there are things we can learn from when we go back and watch this game."

With the Pokes down by four points with 1:45 left, free throws from senior Justin Jamesand Jordan Naughton put the Pokes within reach of the victory. Dixie State missed a pair of free throws with 12.9 seconds left giving Young the opportunity to win the contest, as his double clutched three found nothing but net for the Wyoming win.

"The guys were looking at me on the floor before Dixie's last missed free throw wondering if I wanted a timeout, but I think in those scenarios, unless you feel confident about running a specific play, you put the ball in your best player's hands," Edwards said. "A timeout I believe would have given them time to set up their full-court trap, so to me it was better to put it in J.J.'s (Justin James) hands. We put J.J. and (Hunter) Thompson in the ball screen, and then Thompson got the ball from J.J. and the best part of the play was Thompson made the extra pass to give Trace an opportunity to get a good look. Trace obviously did a great job putting the shot in."

Young tied for the Wyoming lead in scoring with his 16 points. He went 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-7 from behind the three-point line. He also grabbed six rebounds in his collegiate debut. James added 16 points, as he also added eight rebounds and four assists. Naughton added 12 points for a season best. He played a season-best 25 minutes.

"Obviously, having Trace (Young) out there tonight on his birthday and playing in his first game, he started the game and hit the game winner so he had a lot of pluses tonight," Edwards said. "I didn't think he played a perfect game, but I was really pleased with how hard he played. You're going to make some mistakes when you play as hard as he did, but I would rather have that than a player being passive."

Wyoming shot 42 percent from the field going 18-of-43 on the night, while holding Dixie State to 35 percent (19-of-55). Wyoming won the battle on the glass, 35-34 and scored 18 points in the paint. The Pokes also scored 12 points on the fast break for a season high.

The Pokes got off to a 6-0 lead on the Trailblazers in the opening minutes. Young tallied the first points of the game and his career with a triple. Wyoming held Dixie State 0-of-6 from the field to open the game.
The Trailblazers would take their first lead of the game on a jumper from Julien Ducree halfway through the half for a 14-13 advantage. Wyoming went scoreless for over four minutes until Brandon Porter hit a triple to take the lead back at 16-14 with 8:02 left in the frame.

Dixie State would battle and build a five-point advantage at 24-19 with 3:30 remaining in the half on an 8-0 run paced by a pair of three pointers. But James scored eight-straight points with three from the free throw line and a triple to give Wyoming a 27-24 advantage with just under two minutes left.

Young would add a three pointer for the Pokes to make it a 30-28 game, but free throws from Quincy Mathews made it a 30-30 contest at the break Wyoming shot 44 percent from the field, but were out rebounded 18-14 in the first 20 minutes.

Let’s go Justin! Do not relinquish your leadership role to this red shirt freshman tonight. Take control of your team and show them the way to victory.
