So I am planning a trip to Mexico City with the wife the day after Christmas. However, the concern I have is about safety. I have heard bad things about Mexico City. Plus with all the stuff with the cartels, it makes it even more dicey.

Any input on whether it's a safe place to visit would be appreciated.

Yes. I was there earlier this year, rode the metro, walked around the city, took taxis all over. Parts of the city put River Oaks to shame. You'll be fine.

I was there for a week in June of 2009. Was nervous the first day, but got over it pretty quick. Got sick the last day I was there.

What were you nervous about? Why are Americans so afraid?

No, don't go there. I recommend Cuba.

Funny you mention that, because I was in Mexico City on a layover to Havana, Cuba. One of the coolest places I've ever had the opportunity to visit.

Well for one, it took me a while to get used to all the security guards with shotguns. They weren't everywhere but if you threw a rock you would probably hit a few (I am not advocating throwing rocks at people in Mexico City).

One of the people I had meetings with (casino business) had a guard/driver who did not have a shotgun but was well armed regardless.

And of course the traffic sucks and the drivers aren't that much better. But that isn't saying anything people already know.

WTH. For a romantic holiday trip, you take your wife to a third world nation? That is some cheap Alief blood.

I live there, and mexico city is one of the cities with less cartel participation in the country.

Obviously like any other city, like NYC you have to be careful where you are, and what you do.

you could ask for the hotel to call a taxi for you at night.

Don't try to wake up a sleeping giant. Let sleeping dogs lie. Go about your business, and don't look like you have too much money. Try to at least blend in and stay in public places.

    david_rocket, I'm glad you're doing well, man.
I completely agree-aaaahhhh... achuba danoyaaaaa...

    Sincerely yours,

You will be ok, like someone mentioned earlier, stay with the crowds and follow your tour guide. You will obviously know where not to go, just enjoy your vacation. The media makes it much worst than what it really is.

I went to Mexico twice, once in October and again in November.

Mexico City, Guanajuato, Tarimoro, Monterrey, Cuernavaca Morelos

Some of those are smaller towns and one would think they are more dangerous, but in actuality they are the safest and most relaxing places to be in.

    Same question, different year...

My wife and I are going next month, we have a general idea about places to go and things to do but anyone have any particular place we need to go to or place to eat?
