Immigration Crisis in Europe - what should be done?

The EU as a whole has to come together on this. Thanks to the Schengen agreement, there aren't really any border controls between EU countries so the burden of immigration enforcement ends up falling on periphery countries. Most of those countries happen to be the least equipped to handle an influx of immigrants (even if refugees dont plan on staying in those countries).

The EU has tried repeatedly to come to an EU wide asylum agreement that shares the burden across the EU but the problem is that while many of the northern and western European nations have long histories of accepting refugees, the eastern and southern EU states have no such history and are quite openly hostile to refugees. Combine that with the fact that these hostile countries (like Hungary) serve as an entry point for refugees and you start to see the problem.

I'd love to see the US lead on this and try and help with refugee resettlement and push others to do the same. Unfortunately just as the Republican Party is going full out anti-immigrant, so are many countries in Europe.

The EU also needs to tell Hungary to get out. Hungary has been a nightmare in so many ways. They barely qualify as a democracy anymore and have openly defied EU rules on countless occasions. They have no place in the EU and should be kicked out if they keep this up.

 

They should build a wall and make Syria pay for it

I largely agree with this. The EU needs a region wide solution, spread out the burden of accepting refugees. I too would like to see the US be willing to accept more refugees but you're right that with all of the xenophobia here that probably won't happen.

There needs to be an end to the war in Syria but that is more complicated than figuring out how to deal with the refugee crisis.

 

UN get together and agree on # of immigrants each nations would take in to help this crisis. Funded by the world nations. Maybe Israel and/or Egypt is the staging area for immigrants. Any crisis of this magnitude is more than just a EU issue.


For some perspective, look at the immigrates out of SE Asian in the late 70s to early 80s.

- One million + fled SE Asia
- 1st wave fled in 1975 and arrive in the US. ~125K. Mostly to the US.
- 2nd wave fled in 1978 known was "boat people". ~200k died at sea from 78-79. Many of them that survived still suffer greatly at the hand of pirates. Those that made it, land in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong.
- 3rd wave fled in 1979. Many to Thailand from Cambodia.
- By 1979, 400K Vietnamese & Cambodian refugees lived in temp cmaps throughout SE Asia.
- These countries that took in these immigrants were overwhelmed. For example, Malaysian was taking in 65k a month. Malaysian and Thailand both began to threatened and took action to remove the immigrants (Thailand push them back to Cambodia), Malaysian tow the boat back out to sea.
- In 1979, UN held an emergency meeting (US, France, Australia, Canada, others). As a result, the US agreed to allow 14k in per month (168k per year). Other countries also made pledges and provide refugee relief funds.
- VP Mondale represented US and said this:

- After the UN meeting, President Carter ordered the Seventh Fleet, operating in the South China Sea, to look for and pick up "boat people" who continued to flee Vietnam.
- (not sure) I believe close to 1M immigrant to the US
- (not sure) I believe the US spent 1 Billion to resettle these immigrant to the US.


In term of economic, I think the immigrants from SE Asia are a great success. You got folks that are very grateful to their host nations, are hard worker and a positive to their host nations.

Germany is being over run.

They are going to Turkey, then decide that isn't financially good enough, so on to Greece and the trek concludes in places like Germany.

Western Europe is probably the nicest area on the planet, and it is at risk. Having nations like Germany taking on 750,000-1,000,000 new immigrants can and probably will be a disaster.

Immigration within reason is a good thing, but coming off the real issues in Europe financially and the mass numbers makes it a serious issue.

I live in an island right across Turkey. Every single night there are boats with immigrants washed ashore. When the coastguard reaches them they sink their own boats so they will have to be rescued. Many of them are children who are without their parents.
A lot claim to be Syrians but there are many from Africa and Bagladesh as well.
You can see them every day waiting in the port for the ship to come so they go to athens and from there to Italy/Bulgaria/ Albania and then to Germany and the UK.
They even refuse to ask for asylum here because then they can't move countries.

Before the summer the coastguard used to interview them and ask specific questions to determine if they are trully Syrians but now there are SOOO many. Thousands every week.
They also started creating very very much trouble for the locals. Tonight when I travel by ship to the mainland I knwo that more than half the passengers will be illegals. I had to get a ticket 2 weeks in advance to even find a seat in the ship and will be a sleepless night because it's too dangerous to sleep in fear of getting mugged.

The situation is out of control. And then you have racistic countries like Hungary and Latvia refusing to accept 250 immigrants!250! ffs

 

Hopefully countries will think twice before attempting another regime change.
Took down Saddam, a brutal dictator, and somehow made things significantly worse in Iraq.
Took down Gaddafi, another brutal dictator, and somehow made things significantly worse in Libya.
Tried to take down Assad, another proud member of the brutal dictator club, Assad is still here but now practically the entire country is in ruins and the process spawned several large & powerful crazy terrorist organizations.

 

Clear out all the folks. Let Assad and ISIL duke it out. Drop an H-bomb.
