Republicans have made the calculations that a certain amount of people MUST BE SACRIFICED for MONEY! There will be over 100,000 deaths by the end the May. So, how many deaths are you willing accept? Are you going to Sacrifice your Mom,Dad, Grandparents? Are you going to a death of a seemingly healthy family member? This virus may run thru most people asymptomatic, but when it finds people that it can attack...it is devastating. How many deaths are worth the Almighty Dollar?

I'm willing to sacrifice a large percentage of workers starting at the top of every company in the country.

This isn't the time to look back and figure out what went wrong, but man, if the virus were taken seriously from the start, there wouldn't be a need to ponder this kind of ultimatum.

From a practical stand point it depends on how long this has been going on, how restless people are and the age of those dying.

If the answer is we see month after month with 30,000 dead then people will become numb if they can go out to eat, the movies and travel. Couple that with elderly and disabled and the fat dying??? A death toll over a million would be tolerated fairly easily.

Now start having younger people die and rates trending up, and we may see as balk at 250,000.

As it is the President has made the decision that keeping the economy running trumps the loss of lives from COVID19. That isn’t going to change. As long as old people and sick people die, Trump looks good.

Our society has never been structured around preventing as much death as possible.

If we practiced social distancing and wore face masks and other ppe in this same time period in 2019 would less people have died of infectious diseases? Obviously.

Did that make us “murderers” for not doing so in 2019? No.

There has always been an association or “trade-off” between the functioning of society the way we want and deaths. Maybe you just never noticed before.

You want a society that is 100% oriented towards preventing death? We’ve never had one.

This is not about Preventing death, it is about just simply stopping the spread.

The problem with that is this virus has no cure, is one of the MOST contagious diseases ever (measles may be more) and there are steps that can be done for a time to minimize death. There is no trade off for someone dying. If you family member dies: "Oh well, that's the trade off we make so I can buy my new car!" **** that.

You seem like a Republican that is willing to trade Grandma, Auntie, and your Parents so you can have STUFF. I'm glad you get to make the decision on who lives and dies......

So the old, disabled, and fat people are worthless? Just put a bullet in their head...it is faster.

Plus most facemasks people wear only work for 20 mins and the ones that do work have to be thoroughly cleaned after each use.

Try not to be so hysterical if you want people to engage in good faith or is this more about sanctimonious grandstanding?

Do hundreds of thousands of people die in the United States every year from infectious diseases? Yes.

Would less people die every year of infectious diseases if we always practiced social distancing and wore ppe? Yes.

We, as a civilization, have decided not to operate like that. Does that cost lives? Yes.

Whats the magic number of lives? Who is to say.

As of the time this writing the death count in Harris County is 133. A county of nearly 5 million.

Nothing will 'save the economy" like restaurants and retailers operating at half of capacity and slowly destroying our hospital system while infections and mass dieoffs continue. . That's some rocket fuel. I'm Soo worried about inflation

There's already tens of thousands of people under 60 who have died, not to mention those with lung damage.

The "meh it's just the olds" fiction just doesn't hold up in the real world, it's not an old person virus anymore than it's a blue state virus.

It's coming for some thousands of incel boys and their AR15s no matter how many pepe clowns they post or Prager U degrees they frame. You hate to see it...

    Honestly this is stupid.

If the health industry collapses then that will have an overwhelming negative effect on the US economy despite its size.

You're already seeing countries that have controlled it. Australia Austria Singapore etc are getting ready open up more travel between each other.

Controlling it is the best way to returning to normality.

I have no idea where you get this 20 minute idea, unless you mean in full contact with an infected person.

But wearing face masks, avoiding large crowds and enclosed spaces with a lot of people, using hand sanitizers frequently, keeping the suggested minimum distance from strangers, and getting yourself checked out and keeping a distance when you have a temperature or any of the symptoms.

These are truly simple and obvious things but if every ordinary person chose to take this seriously for like a month, the infection rate is bound to slow drastically.

Add to that the government enacting testing and contact tracing measures, and the country would save thousands of lives.

    It really isn't rocket science.

Maybe the lockdown with closing schools “flattened the curve before and explosions in many areas.
Maybe that is because the nature of Houston, spread out. Maybe warmer (Humidity)helps fight spread of respiratory droplets. The problem is...this just the beginning, not the end. This virus has already mutated to a more contagious strain. Wait til you open Malls, movie theaters, and where people are close together....without masks. Schools open and there is no vaccine. Guess what, low death totals will start to rise. Researchers and Doctors are looking at the LONG game. We are in maybe the 2 inning of a 9 inning game.

Whatever the number is, I think it'd take a lot of calculus to figure it out. It's more than 70,000. Hopefully less than a million.
