I'm 48 actually. I actually saw Akeem (at the time) and Sampson play in person. 100M+ people play LoL and some make massive $ playing it for a living. Pacman for comparison only had a total of 400,000 machines and at it's peak 59 million players worldwide. So yes indeed LoL is more popular than Pacman was.
Currently the 2017 League of Legends World Championship is being held in China. The quarterfinals started yesterday and will go on till Sunday. Cloud 9 (the only North American team left) will face one of the Chinese teams this Sunday (3am CDT, I guess). Every game will be live on LoL Esports and later uploaded for viewing HERE. Not to that extent yet in terms of individual salaries, I don't think. But still pretty good earnings if you're one of the top players, in terms of salary & sponsorship, plus prize money combined. Last year's highest overall earnings from the prize money for all esports

I understand what LoL is, but having avoided esports totally I am unclear on what exactly it means to "buy into" a league. You put your money in...what do you get out? And is this a hands-off sponsorship or an active process where the Houston Rockets organization is directly responsible for hiring a roster of League players and managing their training/planning needs?
So like...Harden and CP3 and other Rockets players are entered into this league and they are going to play against a bunch of nerds? 13 million buy in for a video game? Can we at least get Yao or do they have to be current Rockets?
I think they are going to share revenue with Riot based on in game merchandise New format Riot games is trying out. They are franchising the teams like the NBA, with revenue sharing and everything else. But yeah Houston is putting up 13 million dollars to be part of the league and will be responsible for fielding a roster and paying for them. I'm not sure what the actual financial model is going to be and what the end goal is. My guess is there will be online merchandise that can be purchased and the profit will be shared amongst the teams, there's also ads and sponsors for their streams and that will be shared as well. I doubt the Rockets are doing it for the money, 13 mil is chump change for them, it's probably for pushing the Rockets brand to a certain demographic who are young and potentially be rich in the future.
