Points per 100 Possessions all Time Top Ten (back to 73-74)

    1. Harden 2019 - 48.5
    2. Harden 2018 - 48.2
    3. Jordan 1986 - 46.4
    4. Bryant 2005 - 45.6
    5. Brodie 2016 - 44.8
    6. Jordan 1987 - 43.6
    7. Jordan 1992 - 43.0
    8. Jordan 1991 - 42.7
    9. Jordan 1989 - 42.7
    10. Curry 2015 - 42.5

Harden isn't just best on the list, he's better than Jordan's best season by over 2 points and nearly 3 points better than Kobe while taking more than 3 shots per 100 possessions less than either player did in their best season.

By the way, Harden's MVP season is #14 on the list. The only players since 2006 to make the top 15 were Curry 2015 and (surprise) 2016 Isiah Thomas at #13.

2019 MVP Giannis checks in at #20 on this list. Durant's best season is #17. Lebron's best season is #23.

And just to make it clear how difficult it is to make this list, the only players to make the Top 20 list more than one time are Jordan (7 times) and Harden (3 times). The only other player to average more than 40 points per 100 possessions twice is Russell Westbrook at #5 and #22.

    Here's the link: https://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/tiny.fcgi?id=KEJeW

    Amazing.

Imagine how many times Wilt or Kareem would be in top 10 if list encompassed entire NBA history.

Wilts numbers aren't as high as you would think. In his 50ppg season his team played at a pace of 131 which is ridiculous. During that season he also averaged over 48 mpg (also ridiculous), in other words, he played all game every game. So that means he was scoring 50 points per 131, which is only 38 points per 100. Quite a bit below Harden.

Kareem's best scoring season was 34.8 ppg and his team placed at a 111.2 pace. That season he played 44mpg, which is roughly 91.6% of each game, which means he played ~102 possessions. That's only ~34 points per 100 possessions, again, way below Harden.

I even surprised myself after looking this up...did not expect Harden to blow them both out of the water :)

Harden's ability to draw free throws is one factor in this. Speaks to the sort of high-value offense he generates. But the more I think about it, the main factor may just be the volume of threes he takes, combined with his usage rate. I'd like to see if Harden still tops this list after controlling for usage. Curry, for example, might move up, given his ability to hit threes at a higher percentage.

Okay this is fun. IF Morey posted that in response to my thread (big IF, but the timing is right and it's fun to think about it) then I'd bet he liked my post before he tweeted the table out.

That would mean that one of the following 12 people is actually Daryl Morey:

Yeah, that's further proof how saying Harden had a bad playoff year, last yr, is foolish.
I don't see Kawhi or Giannis on that list.
    • List is easier to appreciate when you ignore 1st Round Exits
    • This is some rarified air to get out of 1st Round. Lebron's only done it twice.
    • Harden did it against the 2 best defenses designed to stop him.
Same Playoff Data, but Ignoring 1st Round Exits

Not really. Kareem and wilt score all those points when 140 point games were the norm. There were a lot more possessions back then. What really helps modern players is the 3 point line. 3 is worth more than 2.
