http://reason.com/blog/2017/10/17/rand-paul-endorses-roy-moore-in-alabama I wonder how many other self-proclaimed libertarian are just like Randal.
Ayn Rand was an atheist but I don't know why other libertarians necessarily would be. The only thing I would bet on a libertarian being is white and way into drugs or prostitution, or believe they can make a lot of money from either, or just can't think of a cool way to say socially liberal and fiscally conservative, or just reflexively hate authority and/or any kind of lines or paperwork.
I think most people who say they are libertarian simply are saying that they are some mix of fiscally responsible and socially tolerant since it's just easier to say it that way. Most of them still end up voting for Republicans or Democrats most of the time because that's just the reality of the US political system but they are a group that typically has strong disagreements with both major parties since both of them tend to be authoritarian far too often. When it comes to endorsing one over the other, the fact that one has flaws doesn't mean that you don't prefer that flawed candidate over a different candidate you see as more flawed.
it's not an endorsement of everything the person has done or said or believes it's an endorsement of the least bad outcome available
Fwiw Ayn Rand wasn't a libertarian - at least not if you asked her. The book Goddess of the American Right is a good book on her. Don't let the title fool you, it's not Rand-worship. It's just a telling of her personal story, which is far more interesting than her objectivism philisophy or anything she wrote.
