BEIJING — After three days of fanning nationalistic outrage, the Chinese government abruptly moved on Thursday to tamp down public anger at the N.B.A. as concerns spread in Beijing that the rhetoric was damaging China’s interests and image around the world.

Now, the Chinese government appears to be reassessing its campaign against the N.B.A. and dialing down the clamor. The government is already in a bruising trade war with the United States, and a backlash against China could hurt its image in the sporting world ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics near Beijing. The dispute with the N.B.A. was also quickly politicizing an audience of sports fans who would not normally focus on issues like the protests in Hong Kong.

Editors at state news outlets have told reporters to avoid emphasizing the N.B.A. issue for fear that it might become overheated, according to interviews with three journalists on Thursday.

The controversy soon fell off the government-guided list of top 10 trending topics on Weibo, the country’s Twitter-like microblogging service. The authorities did not cancel Thursday’s preseason N.B.A. game in Shanghai.

And even the highly nationalistic Global Times tabloid stopped pushing populist indignation over the tweet.

Beijing officials worry that a highly politicized struggle over the Hong Kong protests might hurt the two days of high-level trade talks starting on Thursday in Washington. Vice Premier Liu He is leading the Chinese negotiating team in Washington, and two people familiar with the talks said that the Chinese side was ready to conclude a partial deal with the Trump administration.

The protests may cause high-profile athletes and their fans around the world to pay attention to the Hong Kong protests for the first time, and their sympathies might lie with the protesters instead of Beijing, one of the two people said. Both of them insisted on anonymity because of the sensitivity of the trade and nationalism issues involved.

Tying sports very closely to Beijing’s handling of the Hong Kong protests may increase the risk of an international boycott of the Winter Olympics to be held in China in 2022, at a town just outside of Beijing. China has been wary for many months of a possible boycott.

The campaign against the N.B.A. also put in an awkward position the many retailers that have large stocks of merchandise carrying various brands of the N.B.A. Businesses are reluctant to write off the value of this inventory.

The basketball issue was also drawing unwelcome attention to Alibaba, a Chinese electronic commerce giant that is trying to expand in the United States to compete with Amazon and that has sought to avoid becoming mired in political disputes between China and the United States.

This isn't the first time the PRC has had to back down on stoking nationalism. There was an incident a few years ago when following a dispute with Japan anti-Japanese protests spinned out of control to attacking Japanese consulates and even Japanese cars.

Rampant nationalism while being powerful can also be dangerous to those who use it especially when their are interest that extend beyond national identity such as the global economy. For as many people criticize the PRC as being Communists and this has a battle against Communism the PRC used the tools of capitalism, against the NBA. Those are the same tools that can be turned back against the PRC.

I want to first state that a functional relationship with China is good for both countries. With that being said, a political war between the US and China would hurt China more. The US can get other countries to build cheap stuff for them, however China could never replace the economic demand that the US brings. We literally screwed over China's biggest tech company with a single ban.

the overreaction to a single tweet that was quickly deleted was so ridiculous

u would’ve sworn Morey was in Hong Kong handing out supplies to protesters, waving signs and banners front row in the crowd, etc...the nonsense had to die down eventually

this reminded me of when I used to blow up over little things when I was a kid, and my pride wouldn’t let it go...eventually I’d sit there like “What am I doing?”

Its a shame the NBA didnt play a bigger role in standing up to China and only waited until politicians started giving them heat over it.

The NBA was in a real quandary. Risk losing revenue from China or risk losing revenue here in the States. And the bravest of them all stayed silent. These are true life lessons.

I still can't believe the magnitude to which China let this get out of hand. Once the initial tweet was deleted they should have let it go, they don't even have twitter in China to begin with. The thing would have blown over quickly in China and would have barely made a blip in the US news cycle. This was nothing.

Now everybody and their mother knows about this story, and anti China sentiment has bubbled up strong. Despite their posturing they certainly don't want to lose the NBA, and now even if this blows over and they get back on track this is gonna be a constant underlying story during the season and the NBA is gonna have hell keeping it quiet over here.

Just because they're communist people act like they don't care about PR, but they most certainly do and this has become a disaster for them. All their little economic bully moves are getting called out left and right now instead of happening in the background.

Safe to say that an NBA ban won't happen at this point.

What remains to be seen is if a Rockets specific ban will be implemented though.

Will they do damage control by both sides by singling out the Rockets?

I know the NBA laughs at the idea of rigged games.

But the league having a major, major financial incentive to make sure one of their marquee teams doesn't go far in the postseason seems like an issue they would like off the table.

Boycott the olympics you say? Sounds like China allowed the mighty dollar or yen to trump their nationalist stance. Hmm

Well, Salman Rushdie eventually was able to show his face, so I guess Morey may survive a Chinese version of "fatwa".

Thing about the Olympics, as aired by NBC (always), it makes you think that 75% of the TV audience must be female ("and here's another pointless human interest story, five more minutes of commercials......")

    But I digress.
