Anyone have any idea why his +/- is this incredible?

As always w/ith +/-, it can be misleading to a certain extent, as it is hard to tell if they player is simply benefiting from the other 4 players on the court happening to play well.

However, he isn't a starter, meaning he should not be part of the "best" lineup anymore than other starters. It may just be that our 2nd unit is dominating their 2nd unit, but House/Faried numbers aren't as striking as Rivers.

We all know he is a great defender, but we are just TORCHING the Jazz when he is on the court.

I definitely will be looking closer at the lineups and his impact when re-watching the first 2 games, while waiting for Saturday. Just wondering if people have noticed what the hell is happening out there in regard to Rivers. I wonder what advanced stats could be looked at to understand his impact better.

He has been such an incredible addition to our team. Truly proving to EVERYONE that he is not here because of nepotism, he belongs and then some

He plays defense. He doesn’t turn the ball over. He doesn’t take bad shots. He drives to the basket and breaks down the defense. He plays a solid game without taking shots away from better shooters.

Yes, but you must first thank the silly Suns management for waiving him.

And CP3 for being nice enough to get injured in that Miami game and opening up a roster spot.

yup. he understands his role. He also benefits a lot on the kick-out, not being guarded by their best defender either. So he can get to the basket or drive and dish. whenever he hits that step back 3, its all icing on the cake, extra.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what did CP3's injury in that Miami game have anything to do with opening up a roster spot? He obviously wasn't going anywhere.

Also goes to show, that whatever algorithms and models Morey has developed, remains WAY above any other teams. Morey would have turned the 5-all star Warriors into the deepest team in the league using chump change, and it would be over. He (and Harden) are keeping us on their level. I know Morey models "value" which is a mix of win production and market cost.

These algorithms ignore/control for hype and other human biases that the old schoolers still fall victim to.

You have a reputation of being too old, have a funky shot, accused of nepotism, "lost it" bc other coaches bench them, but you have measurables that say you these things really do not impact how valuable you are? Morey will take you with a smile.

The lineup data tells a very interesting story here, it's pretty surprising, at least to me. It looks like no matter who else is on the floor, if you have Rivers out there, the lineup is going to dominate.

If you look at 2 man lineups, he is in 7 of the top 10, and all have a net rating of 40 or higher.

If you look at your 3 man lineups, he's in 7 out of our top 7 (all the ones he's played in), and each has a net rating of 50 or higher.

Getting into really small sample sizes here, though it's all we have, but in our 4 man lineups he's in 3 of the top 4, and each one has a net rating of 40 or higher

TLDR: Literally any lineup with Austin Rivers outscores our opponents by 40 points per 100 poss.

WOW. These are incredible statistics. Morey needs to sign him to a 3-year contract today before he gets a max... haha I am only half kidding.

I agree with that, but Morey was lucky to acquire Rivers and Faried. If they weren't waived we would have ended up with inferior players. Trading Gordon our only asset would have acquired either one of them, but it would have decreased our depth.
Algorithms are fine, but they aren't a substitute for talent. People were winning before algorithms and stats.

It opened up a huge gaping hole in the rotation for a point guard.

He fits well with our system of switching and gaurding the perimeter, penetrating into the paint, and ball handles. When he hits the 3 pointer...ohhh mann...Morey’s Estacy.

Even without looking at any numbers or stats, he’s been our biggest and most important acquisition, of not only providing injury insurance for Chris Paul, but in addition his perimeter defense. Last years playoffs and season, our defensive weakness was perimeter players would get to the rim, especially opposing team’s scrubs. He fills that weakness very well.
