Silly me...I assumed that since you made the statement to Joe Smith, that you knew what post you were referring to. It's in this thread. [Athletic] Bagwell 58th Best Player of All-Time
I did think I was talking to Joe since he's taken over this thread, hard to tell 'em apart sometimes when you're not here everyday.
Ozzie Smith really? Looks like you are reaching to omit Bagwell. Also interesting that you included Piazza who was not known for defense and has been in question for steroids
Bagwell. Before injuries really got to him he was fast enough to be a base stealing threat. And his glove was better than Big Puma’s.
Pity really.....this idiot is giving our reliever a bad name. We need to stop feeding this guy. He’s not her for a logical discussion.
OK, prove your credibility. What statistics training do you have that enable you to call actual statisticians frauds?
Very few people who create baseball stats are PhD statisticians, hack baseball writers looking to sell a book, or include a couple of chapters in a book, me - graduate level statistics and logic based systems.
"Bottom line, Thomas beats Bagwell in hitting by a slim margin. Bagwell beats Thomas in everything else by a wide margin. Given that the bulk of their value is on offense, as an overall player, Thomas might – might – have a slight advantage. But Bagwell was nearly as great, and was a much more well-rounded player. If I had to choose between the two in 1990, knowing full well what they’d do in their careers, I’d probably take Bagwell." - Bill James
You guys don't get it, I don't have much reverence for guys like Bill James - or most baseball writers, compared to the field I work in, baseball stats would be a considerable step down in intellectual rigor, I quote him because I know I am speaking all the fanboys language that watched Moneyball three times, and eat up that crap Michael Lewis spews out on a regular basis.
Bill James was used earlier in this thread to prop Pedro Guerrero. Now, the same poster says he doesn't respect Mr James. Some poeple can't remember their own thoughts.
To illustrate the point that "the father of baseball analytics" isn't exactly a Rhodes Scholar, there are some PhD types who have written analytics baseball themed books, but most of the biz of baseball analytics (although by previous standards seems impressive), by other professional standards, say theoretical physics, are second rate amateurs. The analytics movement in baseball is strictly biz motivated, same as the green movement for the environment. Al Gore isn't very green at all, and baseball analytics are improperly used, and most fail to understand them enough to know their limitations. A little bit of knowledge in the wrong hands is a terrible thing.
Just using someone who you could relate to, talking your language. I sure the heck didn't BJ to tell me PG was a good hitter in his day, opposing pitchers always tried to pitch around him in the lineup.
