By my (very rough) calculus, here’s how much payroll flexibility Houston projects to have over the next 5 seasons:

    2019: $17M
    2020: $39M
    2021: $66M
    2022: $81M
    2023: $81M

This assumes they keep all their arb eligibles and don’t make any new extensions, trades or free agent signings.

Here’s how much fWAR I project for those rosters:

    2019: 49.4
2020: 49.0 (replace Verlander/Cole/McHugh with Whitley/Martin/Bukauskas/McCullers, offense boost from Tucker)
    2021: 49.5 (replace Marisnick/Reddick/Springer/Brantley with Alvarez/Fisher/Straw)
    2022: 43.5 (lose Correa, McCullers)
    2023: 41.5 (lose Osuna, Pressly)

    Also

Just to note: the signing bonus is lumped in with the rest of the guaranteed money for AAV purposes; awards bonuses (AS/GG/MVP/etc...) get included with that season's CBT calculation (finalized on December 2); the escalators would affect AAV starting with the year they are actualized.

damn I literally got teary eyed watching that.

Reminds me, I remember watching video after video of people in their gutted homes celebrating the Astros win after Harvey and just sobbing, uncontrollably. I love Bregman. I love the Astros. And I love Houston.

Good point. I don’t think Aiken and his agent get nearly enough credit here. Houston heroes! We arguably don’t have a World Series title if he has a normal UCL.

In that alternate reality, he’s still toiling in A ball, hopefully making a comeback after not having thrown a pitch since 2017...which is his actual reality. What an enormous bullet we dodged and unbelievable outcome it produced.

Yeah, it would be one thing if the Astros simply passed on him.... but they were still willing to sign him to the amount needed to secure a comp pick the following year... and Aiken could have very well taken the deal had him and his agent not been thinking with their egos instead of thinking responsibly.

And Alex Bregman would probably be a Texas Ranger.
