He was crazy dedicated to his performances. He's always approached it almost like a proud athlete. If he can't put fourth a worthy performance, he doesn't waste his time. He's 60 which is relatively young for an actor, but not really all that young. Hopefully he's just retiring, and not a health issue. Certainly can't question his performances, they've all been great.
Yes, we will all miss Daniel Plainview as well. In all seriousness though, that is a bit strange, but like @sealclubber1016 said.. he was very much into his rolls and took them very seriously. He was a great actor! Him playing The Butcher was awesome!
I liked the Butcher and Lincoln, but honestly, he doesn't seem like someone who did a lot of work so you do wonder about who he really is or what he's going through. And that sounds like the story for his life, not just right now.
Stars and Bars has a very underrated performance from Daniel Day-Lewis. It was actually pretty funny as well.
Another favorite actor of mine, Tom Hulze, did the same thing...but at a younger age, right? He did go to Broadway though, quitting just Hollywood. Then quit that shortly after Not a lot of work?? My Left Foot (Oscar), My Beautiful Laundrette, Room with a View and Unbearable Lightness of Being (must see for the unbearable sexiness of it all) quickly come to mind...and those were in the '80s...and then everything after that What. You didn't see There Will Be Blood
I always wanted to see Lewis play Bono in a film on U2. But, it would have worked better in his younger days with the long hair.
I'm sorry to hear this. I've always thought he was a brilliant actor. But, he can always come back to acting if he wants to.
He can still do whatever he likes. One thing is not the world. It is only the beginning of another. We were blessed to watch one of the Greats. He might get into writing or directing. His wife does it.
He's not going through anything. His performances take a lot out of him. He doesn't live in LA or NY, he doesn't do Late Night or SNL, he doesn't endorse products, he doesn't show up on TMZ. He lives in seclusion by design, to avoid the Hollywood lifestyle and maintain peace for himself and his family.
Brilliant actor that will be missed. Any movie he was in became appointment viewing for me. Bill the Butcher was my favorite character of his...
Aside from the huge number of films he made, you should read about how he would prepare for the roles.
