Looking back on our list of "finalist" candidates for the job (Applewhite, Orlando, Kiffin, and Miles).... In retrospect, this is not a good list. At all. Kiffin and Miles were clearly job hoppers that run boring as hell pro style offenses that simply don't work in G5 recruiting, while Orlando and Major are simply not HC material. We should have either 1) went after a promising HC from a lesser G5 program or 2) went after a hot OC from a P5 program and simply dealt with the inevitable "will he leave" controversy. I don't know if we can afford 3-4 years to let Major find his way out of the darkness. This program is already tanking so hard it's painful. A rookie HC, a rookie OC, and a total washout DC. I was trying not to be negative prematurely, but this is obviously a recipe for disaster. We need better coaches. Period.
I agree. I think Herm would have gone for that. Major is just too damn conservative. Get the first down and kill the clock even more. Would have been a huge win vs a top 25. Now we will be lucky to win 6 games and make a bowl. South Florida and Navy still on the schedule. Yikes.
I like the spread formation option for running they used last night, as it's classic run and shoot, where if the back can make one person miss he gets a chunk, or if they over commit to the run D, you throw the wr screen. Simple, but generally effective. And there's your one yard. The sneak works well if the defense is aligned properly. You can have all three options on one play giving you three options to get that one yard, especially if your running game is iffy like ours has been all year, outside of las night, it's a solid set.
Don't forget Lincoln Riley who according to reports aced his interview but surprisingly was no longer a candidate. Wonder if Stoops gave him the heads up that he's out. The list was not impressive at all and administration went with the safe hire again to avoid having to hire a coach to repeat the process over. As fickle as our fan base is, administration should of focused on key attributes for inclusion into a P5 conference. Doesn't it seem like many P5 conferences want a school that consistently fills its stadium win or lose? We can't even get 30K and for us to be relevant in Houston, we have to field a winner. We should recognize our place in the current landscape, hire a hot OC, and give him his 2-3 years. I think it's mutually beneficial as long as we get a championship and new years bowl out of it.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...state-michigan-southern-california/788679001/ Houston: The Cougars have been unimpressive in every way this season, but never more so than Thursday night when they allowed Memphis to score all of its points in the second half of a 42-38 loss. Houston led the game 31-14 late in the third quarter, but Memphis got into a rhythm offensively and took the lead with 1:28 left following Major Applewhite’s puzzling decision to punt on a fourth-and-1 with 3:17 remaining when it was clear his defense was gassed. Applewhite was easy to second-guess as a head coaching hire because Houston’s process was incredibly flawed, valuing loyalty over every other factor. But how loyal will the Cougars and their fans be to Applewhite, who is a disappointing 4-3 at a program where mega-booster Tilman Fertitta once bragged that they fire coaches for only winning eight games?
No speed Bad coaching Constant coaching changes leads to bad recruiting.. We have finished middle of the pack or worse in recruiting every year except 2016 for the last 5 years. The constant coaching go round has finally caught up to us.
