Houston Texans Training Camp presented by XFINITY will begin on Thursday, July 25 as the Texans take the field in preparation for the 2019 season.

Six training camp practices will be open to the public:
Thursday, August 1
Saturday, August 3
Saturday, August 10
Wednesday, August 14
Thursday, August 15

The practices on Wednesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 15 will be joint practices with the Detroit Lions. All practices will begin at approximately 9:10 a.m. CT.

The Texans will also travel to Green Bay for joint practices with the Packers on Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6 leading up to the first preseason game on Thursday, August 8.

Open practices will begin at 9:10 a.m. CT and gates will open to fans one hour prior with lines forming on Murworth Drive. Free parking is available beginning at 5 a.m. south of the Houston Methodist Training Center in the Green Lot off Lantern Point Drive. The NFL Clear Bag Policy will be in effect for all practice sessions open to the public.

Fans will have the opportunity to register for a training camp ticket drawing starting Wednesday, July 17 and fans can register until Thursday, July 25 at 3 p.m. at http://www.houstontexans.com/TCTickets. Winning fans will be notified via email on Friday, July 26 and provided with two tickets per person, per practice. Limited bleacher seating is available at each practice session and is first come first serve. There will be no reserved seats.

August 31:
Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 53 players on the Active/Inactive List. Simultaneously with the cut-down to 53, clubs that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness must select one of the following options: place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/NonFootball Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; request waivers; terminate contract; trade contract; or continue to count the player on the Active List.

September 1:
Claiming period for players placed on waivers at the final roster reduction will expire at 12:00 noon, New York time. Upon receipt of the Personnel Notice at approximately 1:00 p.m., New York time, clubs may establish a Practice Squad of 10 players

There really is a buzz in the entire city that's very palpable. You can just feel the energy and excitement. People in Houston really have a feeling that this season could be special. VERY special. No reason to think this team can't win a championship this year.

With the Texans practicing at training camp for the first time on Thursday, this is a good time to project their 53-man roster. Teams don’t have to reduce their rosters to the final 53 until Aug. 31, two days after the last preseason game. Keep in mind that injuries will be the biggest factor in determining the 53-man roster and that teams will add players as they’re waived and released by opponents. * = rookie

The first round pick
True to form with most of the Texans offensive linemen Tytus Howard gets work at plenty of positions. He is getting a lot of reps and it will be fun to watch him work when the pads come on. Howard handled Brennan Scarlett on one rep and kept hand fighting with the linebacker for a few moments after the drill was over. He also held his own against Whitney Mercilus in one rep as well.

The young lineman showed good feet and a solid base in some of the drills. Saturday, when the pads are on for the first time, will tell a lot more.

The former first round pick
Matt Kalil was out working with the Texans. The former Vikings and Panthers left tackle got plenty of work for the Texans which was nice since he was recovering from injury earlier in the year. Ideally a veteran presence like him would help should there be a first or second year player next to him at left guard. The experience may not matter if Kalil can't play. He wasn't tested much Thursday.

Is your refrigerator running routes?
I say this with the utmost respect: Jordan Thomas is the size of a refrigerator and he shouldn't move as well as he does. He showed some huge progress as a rookie last year and developed a solid relationship with Deshaun Watson. That has only gotten stronger. Watson and Thomas are always on the same page and I am not sure how teams are going to guard Thomas but I know they aren't going to have an easy time if this continues.

One of the best surprises of training camp is the fact Will Fuller is practicing from day one of the workouts. He looked crisp and on the same page with the quarterbacks. There was a toe-tap back of the end zone catch he easily hauled in. He also snatched a ball out of the air with ease that was a rocket. His hands are worlds better than his last year at Notre Dame and first year in the NFL.

Kinda coach Andre Johnson
Andre Johnson's official title is special adviser to the head coach. Today, and most days, he was working with the wideouts. He coaches like you would expect Andre Johnson to coach. He is quiet and deliberate. Everyone is listening and watching when he shows something. Today he was delivering advice on footwork in a certain drill. Later he pulled second-year wideout Vyncint Smith aside to coach him up.

There were some teachable moments for Lonnie Johnson the team's second round pick this year. He was coached up on how much to use his hands and when to use them. He's a physical corner and when he lines up with any of the wideouts it is apparent what the Texans liked to see. He lost a rep earlier in a drill only to recover later and beat that same wideout to the ball for an interception. There's a ways to go but there is something there.

Bradley Roby
The free agent corner was a terror in drills. He is freaky athletic and played wideouts multiple ways to his success. Very impressive day for a guy the team is counting on.

Play of the day
Deshaun Watson is a wizard. The drills obviously aren't full contact and they don't even have pads on but there is still a pass rush. J.J. Watt looked to have blanketed Watson on one drill. It was moments away from being blown dead. Then the wizarding started. Watson, off balance, slipped one past Watt's massive mitts into the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. It was incredible.

Watson excels in red zone

On a morning when the Texans worked on the red zone a lot, quarterback Deshaun Watson was sharp. He took quick drops, released the ball fast and put it where he wanted it to go. One of his pinpoint passes was to second-year tight end Jordan Thomas in the corner of the end zone. Watson's timing was impeccable. He threw the ball at the right time, floated it over the outstretched hands of the defensive backs and to Thomas, who got both feet inbounds for an impressive touchdown.

As coach Bill O'Brien kept pointing out in his interview session with the media, the players won't be wearing pads until Saturday. Still, Watson had a superb first day and impressed his coaches and teammates with his work in the end zone.

If the Texans are going to become a prolific offense, Watson has to be quick and crisp the closer they get to the end zone. He can't hold the ball, then take off and try to beat defensive players to the pylons. He must be more decisive in his third season because everything happens quicker in the red zone.

Watt participates in first practice

When players go on active/physically unable to perform list before training camp, it means they can't pass a physical. When they can, they'll be on the field. Defensive end J.J. Watt passed his physical, was removed from PUP and practiced.

Having a healthy Watt means everything to the defense, of course. At this time last year, he knew what he wanted to do coming off major surgery on his leg. He knew what he was capable of, but nobody knew for sure how Watt would play. He played great, finishing with 16 sacks.

Watt looked like an eager rookie Thursday. When he's on the field, there's a buzz on both sides of the ball. It benefits the young offensive linemen to go against Watt in one-on-one drills. Plus, he's always willing to work with other players on techniques and show them tricks of the trade.

If the Texans are going to win the AFC South again, Watt has to have another great season. At this point, nobody is doubting him.

Kalil impresses on first day

Left tackle Matt Kalil, signed as a free agent after being released by Carolina, has impressed his coaches and teammates. After missing two of the last three seasons with the Panthers, including last season with a knee injury, Kalil was brought along slowly in the offseason program. That strategy seems to have paid off.

Bill O'Brien said Kalil, 30 and entering his eighth season, has done an outstanding job of learning the system. He's smart, experienced and has ideal size (6-7, 315) for his position. If Kalil can continue to make progress and earn a starting job, it would give offensive line coach Mike Devlin flexibility with first-round pick Tytus Howard, who could start at left guard. Since the offseason program began, Howard has been learning both positions, and Kalil has been helping him.

Cornerbacks off to fast start

Two cornerbacks — veteran Bradley Roby and rookie Lonnie Johnson (second round) — missed time in the offseason because of injuries. Both were on the field for the first day of practice and making positive impressions.

Johnson (6-2, 213) has excellent size and speed (4.4s) for his position. He made a tremendous play during practice. On a pass intended for second-year receiver Jester Weah, Johnson left his feet and made a diving interception. Plays like that catch defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel's attention and will get Johnson more playing time.

Roby was able to participate in the last two practices of minicamp. He was going full speed in the first practice. He's supposed to start opposite Johnathan Joseph, but Roby has the experience and versatility to move inside, too. If Johnson performs well enough to earn playing time outside opposite Joseph, who's 35 and in his 14th season, Roby could play inside and compete with Aaron Colvin as the top slot corner.

How fast Johnson develops will play a key role in how the secondary plays against a Murderer's Row of quarterbacks over the first seven games of the season: Drew Brees, Nick Foles, Philip Rivers, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Patrick Mahomes and Andrew Luck.

Conspicuous by his absence

Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney wasn't at practice, of course, but it didn't mean he wouldn't be a topic of conversation. Clowney will play under the franchise tag when he reports before the first game at New Orleans and players get paid base salaries over 17 weeks.

When he was asked about Clowney, Bill O'Brien said all the right things about expecting him back, wanting him on the team and how valuable he would be to the defense.

If Clowney wants to maximize his value and get the contract he wants from the Texans or get them to trade him before next year's draft, he'll have to be more productive as a pass rusher. He's been working with former defensive ends Julius Peppers and Chuck Smith in Miami.

What Clowney should do is not wait for the week before the New Orleans game to report. He should report earlier to make he's in the best football condition possible so he won't get off to a slow start. Players who work out on their own and miss a lot of football conditioning are often susceptible to pulled muscles that cause them to miss playing time. Clowney should do everything possible to avoid that by reporting and letting the Texans get him into football condition before they play the Saints.
