We're still evaluating our coaches John to see how we can do a better job. We don't feel like we've missed out on anyone. Broncos hired 49ers QBs coach Rich Scangarello as offensive coordinator. Scangarello, 46, is a Kyle Shanahan disciple having worked with him in Atlanta and San Francisco following numerous jobs around the lower college ranks. He's a relative unknown but is now being tasked with running the offense in Denver alongside new defensive-minded coach Vic Fangio. Scangarello will have OL coach Mike Munchak to lean on, and we expect this offense to be run-oriented based on both Munchak and Shanahan's histories on hammering the run. Jaguars hired ex-Vikings OC John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator. 40-year-old DeFilippo got his NFL coaching start under Tom Coughlin with the Giants and now rejoins him in Jacksonville. This will be DeFilippo's third stint as an OC. He called the plays for the 2015 Browns, getting career years out of Travis Benjamin and Gary Barnidge. DeFilippo then became the Eagles QBs coach and got a lot of notoriety for his work with Carson Wentz and Nick Foles en route to a Super Bowl win. His 13-game run as the Vikings OC in 2018 ended disastrously, but DeFilippo was stuck with an old-timer coach in Mike Zimmer who wanted to run the ball and play defense. This, however, is another stop in Jacksonville where the Jaguars are built the same way. The dots are already connecting on Foles potentially landing with the Jaguars as their new quarterback.
Texans aren't even being mentioned in any OC hunt. How pathetic. Everybody knows they need one yet they sit back and wait for whatever.
Guys, we went 11-5 this year. No changes needed. As far as the 1-3 playoff record (with the 1 win being against a 3rd string rookie QB)......and getting outscored 85-23 in those 3 losses which averages out to a margin of 28-7.....well.... We went 11-5 this year. NO CHANGES NEEDED.
To be clear, what the Texans *need* - more than a coordinator - is a new, different voice on offense; someone to *help* BO'B. BO'B is going to call the plays no matter what and.... that's OK. Reid, Payton, McVay.... they're all *better* at it, yes - but they all call the plays. But in terms of deigning plays, rethinking offensive philosophy, catering to Watson's strengths... *that's* what he needs and I don't a high **** what they call that guy.
Maybe this upcoming season BOB will get a knack for situational coaching.(same thing I said after the cowboys ot game in 2014) Officially giving up hope in getting that new O.C.
Exactly. They don’t think there is anything to address. They won their division, which is all they really care about. Don’t worry, Clowney and Watt and Hopkins will get old/hurt soon enough and BOB will continue grooming Watson as a game manager and it will be time to rebuild again.... in an effort to compete to win the division again.
Agree with this wholeheartedly. BOB can call the plays all he wants. It's just the actual playbook that I have a problem with. No imagination. No playing to our strengths (smart athletic QB) and avoiding our weaknesses (pass plays that take forever to pan out). No quick hitting pass plays. No crossing routes. No pick plays (refs never call these anymore). No zone read plays. No QB rollouts or play-action bootlegs. Just running it up the middle and throwing jump balls to Hopkins for 60 minutes every game. Not saying we need to be running double flea-flickers on every play...but our plays are so predictable. Seems like we have the same plays no matter who we're playing instead of changing it up depending on the type of defense you're playing. We can never seem to exploit weaknesses by the defense. And every defense has a weakness. We just need an x's and o's guru. Hell, let Watson call his own plays.
Correction: Everyone wanted them to, most assumed BOB wouldn't. BOB is a stubborn coach that has never changed, not sure why anyone would be convinced he would now. The only question is how many years we get to waste before we move on.
