[2017] Blake Bortles - Overrated? I recall him having alot of hype and potential Now . .. is he just overrated or what? he just does not seem that great he not BROCK but . . . . I dunno he don't seem to be that much better (I'll admit I have not watched many of his games) Rocket River
It was a surprise when the Jags drafted Bortles at #3. That raised expectations far beyond his ability. I never thought he would succeed as an NFL starter.
I just remember so much hoopla about Bortles. I thought he was suppose to be great. What I saw yesterday seemed so pedestrian SO I wondered what was the reason . . . . O Line. . . coaching . .. or did he just suck Rocket River
For 95% of his career he was profiled as 5-7th round Halfback/gadget player. Then someone at ESPN was randomly like, nah, NFL QB - to boost TV ratings for a bowl game.
I posted these thoughts before the 2014 draft. My take on Blake Bortles was colored by two things: 1. He was very poor against UH and didn't look like an NFL QB in the making. 2. AM610 interviewed George O'Leary (his coach at UCF) before the draft and he was anything but complimentary about Bortles. Most college coaches go out of their way to praise their players' NFL prospects but O'Leary clearly pulled back when given the chance to bless Bortles' NFL upside. The two interviewers were even surprised. O'Leary is a very crusty, blunt kind of guy with little patience for blather. It wasn't outright sabotage but his words killed any notion of Bortles being worth a 1st round pick (in my mind). When the Jags shocked the world and drafted him at #3, it was a perfect match for failure!
Wow. Looks like they reached I did not think Tannehill would amount to much but he seems to be better than Bortles Rocket River
He was just really good at getting stats in garbage time really. His mechanics have gotten worse every year since he's been in the league
Doug Marrone has Bortles looking pretty good last couple of games. I would give the HC job. Pagano meanwhile may be out...
I think we can all conclude Bortles is a bust, but consider one thing: If Doug Marrone weren't such a complete moron, Jags would have played in the Super Bowl against the Eagles with Bortles as QB. He had a career game going against the Patriots and was throwing with precision. But Marrone iced him once the Jags had a two possession lead and they ended up losing.
So much of a QB's success is tied to the franchise situation they're drafted into... along with the coaching staff, the surrounding players, and the overall culture. Bortles was certainly drafted higher than expected... but unless he's mentally inept, he has/had the necessary build, arm, and tools to succeed in this league. After that, it is about what's between the years and playing in a system that is conducive to one's strengths... and with as much turnover as Bortles had in the coaching regime, along with a franchise culture of ineptitude, its not surprising to see that this is where they are. Is his career the same under a Kubiak/McVay-type coach? Or even Andy Reid for that matter?
