RIP ‘Glee’ Star Naya Rivera’s Body Found in California Lake

The body of Glee star Naya Rivera has been found five days after she went missing while boating with her four-year-old son, according to TMZ. Local authorities reportedly discovered Rivera’s body following a four-day search of Lake Piru, California, where she and her son rented a pontoon boat on Wednesday afternoon.

Late Wednesday night, CBS Los Angeles reported that Rivera was missing and presumed dead after a boating incident in Lake Piru, about 50 miles from Los Angeles. Rivera reportedly rented a pontoon boat at approximately 1 p.m. local time Wednesday; three hours later, another boater found her young son, Josey, alone in the boat and immediately notified authorities.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Department divers and helicopters began to search for the actress at approximately 5 p.m., but they were forced to stop after sunset. The search continued at daybreak on Thursday, and Rivera’s body was found this morning.


According to NBC Los Angeles, Rivera’s son told officials that he and his mother were swimming in the lake, but she did not get back into the boat. Local authorities said that Josey was wearing a life vest, but the Glee star was not.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s office confirmed on Twitter this afternoon that a body had been found in Lake Piru, and they will be holding a press conference this afternoon at 2 p.m. PT.

Rivera was best known for her role in Glee as Santana Lopez, a cheerleader who quickly became a fan-favorite character. The actress appeared in all six seasons of the musical dramedy, which ran from 2009 to 2015 on Fox, and won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by and Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2010.

The actress was also known for her work as a child star in The Royal Family and multiple 1990s sitcoms, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Family Matters. In the years since Glee concluded, Rivera appeared in various other projects, most notably Devious Maids and Step Up spinoff series Step Up: High Water.
