There is a fire in the house. Ignore it. Take absolutely no responsibility when it starts raging. As people start to get it under control, encourages behaviors and policies that spread the fire. Now that the fire is raging stronger than ever, you better enter the house or else!

The frustrating part here is everyone was trying to figure a way to re-open safely, if they can. Most districts probably have already made a decision by now or very close to it. Now insert this goddam politic to ignite division and hates where all the parent were once probably all in the same shoe...

Imagine if they had just made everyone wear masks from the beginning - we wouldn't be in this mess

 

The solution is to quarantine every school: kids and teachers have to stay in the school all time for the whole year; education camp or death camp depending on where covid19 goes.

 

The trump cult is probably not far off from comparing mask in schools with indoctrination of Sharia Law.

I’ll never understand it. It’s such a simple thing.

We have surgeons and nurses that wear masks literally the entire day with practically no problems. Experts tell us “Hey seriously, wear a mask, it will help.” But Karen refuses to wear one in the store because “OMG it’s uncomfortable!!!”

And don’t even get me started on the people that say “Now they force you to wear a mask. Soon we will have no freedoms left!”

If I rolled my eyes at those people any further they would pop out of my head. It’s ridiculous.

 

The people who have the power to push that everyone where's masks: POTUS & the Governors.

Because many other countries that have gradually reopened with a high percentage of the population wearing masks have not had a major outbreak. Look at Taiwan - they have worn masks from the first few cases and to date have reported 7 deaths.

This. There are doubts on how effective remote learning is. That and the childcare issue mentioned earlier are strong cases for reopening.

honestly, POTUS & the Governors don't have the "power" to "push" anything. POTUS and the Governors certainly have the responsibility to exert moral and political pressure on citizens through effective leadership. If they are bad leaders, it just isn't gonna happen.

In early April the CDC reversed course and started advising mask usage. "Update: On Friday, April 3, President Trump announced that the CDC now recommends Americans wear a "basic cloth or fabric mask" in public." So mid-May is too late.

I'm not sure how persuasive this is in terms of the "we wouldn't be in this mess" conclusion . . . the United States is not Taiwan. There are a lot of reasons why a pandemic can run a different course in different geographic locations. I still think it is extremely speculative to say that if X, Y, or Z had happened, then we wouldn't be in any "current situation." It's always possible to play what-if games.

 

Ah, America, everybody's favorite dystopian nightmare.

 

The governors do that that power - and some have used it. They certainly have the power to lead. If Trump wore a mask and made it a point of emphasis, many of his followers would follow.

May is not Mar - two months is a long time. In Mar masks were not available and needed by health workers. By May they were available and shown to be effective.

It's not just Taiwan but many other places including multiple European nations. Even in NYC covid hasn't spiked and people are going to stores and out an about - because a very high percentage wear masks. Masks are critical to changing the direction of this disease - by lowering the ro below 1 the disease can't not exponentially explode and in fact continues to decay to a baseline.

 

If we had acted as many of the European nations did that were able to flatten their curve, ours would be flattened now as well. Our leadership failed where theirs did not. Their economy can now safely restart where we are still undoing or re-opening because we've screwed it up. Our nation has a gross disproportionate per capita number of cases, hospitalizations and death. We are far behind what other nations with more competent leadership have accomplished. They were worse at one point and our leadership didn't take it seriously, or make the moves. Now that we've seen the example of what works we still aren't doing it in many cases.

Bottom line we could have put in mandates and correct information along with funding and testing. We didn't. That is the fault, of Trump mostly since he's the head of the leadership chain, and everyone else in that chain as well.
