this is unprecedented times. everyone is going through this. Doesn't mean we need more negative energy to pile on top of it in areas where clearly its not the topic of, especially in the GARM
this article from a couple days ago (if the estimates are accurate) would at least lower that percentage by a lot.. https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/06/25/us/25reuters-health-coronavirus-usa-cases.html
Players are trying to play the games because if not their future pay depends on it. If the games don’t go on to finish the season, all the players take a huge pay cut and a possibility the owners (governors) get to force negotiations on a new CBA agreement. Since coved-19 kills future revenue.......the Governors have all the leverage. Only time will tell if they complete a playoff season for 19/20. Should say no family members allowed in Orlando.
There's always future deaths that could balance the scales, but hopefully not. I just know that people are dying and it's a lot.
Sure thing, buddy. The body bags and economic depression are just a big conspiracy. I mean, it’s not as if we don’t know the pattern where infection spikes lead to more hospitalisations and deaths a couple of weeks later, but yeah, you cracked the code with all this “logic”
As most of you probably know, this dude has a political dog in the fight. The only numbers he will present you are numbers that agree with his own confirmation bias. /Facts...
So tied up in the politics, it’s poisoned his brain. Can’t back down now. There could be 5 million deaths, wouldn’t matter. Trenches are made.
People who are subscribed to a singular dynamic source of news are putting tinfoil hats on... The economic reality is the part that both the players and the league have to deal with today and in the future... This is why the league is coming back, not because we're all stuck at home pissed off -- nobody cares about us. They need the cash flow to continue, however little it may be.
8,000 people die every day in the US of all causes - total deaths are actually down since the COVID breakout. The economic recession (not depression) was caused by state-level government policies of closing down businesses and locking down the people. Never in history have healthy people been quarantined, but that's what we did. A seriously bad policy that led to a lot of unnecessary suffering for families. At this point, with fatalities from COVID down 80% since the peak, the disease is more of an illness, not a fatal risk to 99+% of people. Because of this, I'm strongly in favor of the NBA season starting back up and continuing. Treat the virus like an illness, not a death sentence. Because that's what the data says. Let's play basketball!
no matter what happens they'll finish the season. 1 player gets covid, he's out for 2 or so weeks. if that's in the playoffs, too bad for that team. if its half the team, too bad for that team but they will play on with who they have. guess what, that'll be next season too.
For me, the strangest part of this (from an NBA perspective) has been watching fans frame everything as though it's a referendum on how important sports are to us. That has almost nothing to do with it. They're not coming back for our entertainment. They're coming back because the alternative is potentially years without income, and they're willing to accept a certain amount of risk to avoid that scenario. The thing is, if you can't make the bubble work... how can you reasonably make 2020-21 work, when teams are flying throughout the country (like the MLB and NFL plans)? No one is going to do a bubble for 6+ months, and the COVID risk is certainly greater without one. I know some are optimistic about a vaccine by early 2021, but I'll believe it when I see it. IMO, a lot of that talk is because health experts know that the masses are more willing to comply with protective measures (staying home, masks, etc.) if they think there's an end in sight. I doubt that the average NBA player, who is expected to make at least $8 million next season, is willing to bet their salary on it.
