This is great - and the kind of information we should be using more of. Not "how many people are you willing to let die to help the economy?"

One concern today compared to 1918 is travel/mobility. So one state can do all sorts of intervention to kill the virus, but the sheer number of people traveling in and out of it on a daily basis from other less-aggressive states (or countries, once international travel opens up) may negate all of those effects.

BINGO. That's why the premise of this entire thread is stupid.

Nonsense. We always have the alternative to ban cars, if we are not willing to accept deaths as a tradeoff to the economy. The whole point is that we implicitly make that decision every day, with cars, with falling off beds, and everything else.

So the issue is not that Republicans are willing to risk killing Grandma for the economy. Liberals are also willing to risk killing Grandma for the "right" to drive and other such things. It's all a matter of degree and what is the properly level of risk we are willing to take - something neither political side discusses. And when people say "OPEN UP, FREEDOM!!!" or "IF YOU OPEN ANYTHING, GRANDMA DIES!", they are both being disingenous and playing politics. The reality, as usual, is somewhere in between.

The thread title needs to be changed, based on this holiday weekend.

"How Many Deaths are Acceptable to Save Americans from Any Form of Self-discipline." :D ...

A second wave is almost as certain as a Spiderman reboot at this point.

That's exactly is a big concern. It's reason for a high quality aggressive federal level solution, such as TTI, not 50 go-at-it solutions.

In 6M, we could be facing: virus is well contained in some Asian and other regions. Virus is not contained in Americas and other regions. Travel is not restricted between the countries that have successful contain the virus but is heavily restricted toward countries that failed to contain the virus. If that happen, I think it's pretty clear which economy will recover better and which will continue to suffer.

Maybe we luck out with a vaccine or effective treatment. Playing luck with this... I wouldn't.
