What's a word for someone that doesn't have a Y chromosome? I assumed that was the very definition of a "female". Man/Woman/mankind/womankind/etc. seems a bit more abstract and (maybe) socially constructed.
I think in some contexts "male" or "female" is legitimately trans-exclusionary. For example, if I start up a club at a school, and I declare that its a "male-only" club or a "female-only" club, I see how that can be problematic. But in the context mentioned in the OP, I don't see the problem. Some people just get riled up about words and the effect they have in some contexts, but then they lose sight of the context and attach all their animus to just the word itself. It's worth pushing back against this, IMO.
Well, one thing is for sure, A and B don't answer proposals from US companies much. The answer is No to all those types of companies, because the first criteria of all those is being a US Company. Whole debate could have been averted if A or B knew that. Spoiler I used to answer proposals from US Fortune 100s on behalf of a German company. While that type of question wasn't assigned to me, I faced similar US-centric Technical and Security Certification questions that simply don't apply to Germany, but we had to answer No to. It did give me a chance to pump up the superior laws and regulations Germany has over informational privacy and security, though.
It's like when people say human... it is more scientific and cold than person but it communicates the message.
At work, it's about the work. Despite your need to label me a leftist to make yourself feel better about attacking me (definitely a beta snowflake move), I actually don't allow any political discussion at work because my job is about success. So no, I don't allow it. The last thing a company needs is time lost to people arguing politics in the office. That's what D&D is for! So sorry about your rights to free speech, but yeah, you wouldn't last long in a professional environment with your attitude. I guess you are more socialist than a capitalist after all.
I will ignore your attacks because I see the troll is strong with you. But don't you think the person bringing up pronouns is bringing politics into the office? In this scenario the person who said female was just doing their job until someone started up a political issue. I also agree btw about poitics in the work place. I don't parade my views.
There's an objective and evidence-based answer to this dilemma. It's etymology. The word female came into Middle English in the early 14th century from French femelle, borrowing from Latin femella in the 12th century, which is a diminutive of Classical Latin femina, which literally means woman, so literal in fact that it was not until popular use in Vulgar Latin that it was ever used to describe females of a species other than human. It's literal meaning in Classical Latin is "she who suckles" derived from the Proto-Indo-European *dhē(i)- which means to suck. As a bonus, apparently the words female and male have completely separate etymologies, at least in Latin. It would be a high conceit to argue that a word means what one wants it to in spite of over 2000 years of documented use to the contrary.
There’s overreaction on both sides here, imo. The SJW-type in OP’s post certainly overreacted. The dude meant nothing by it. But y’all can’t say that it isn’t a little derogative at times. Most often from my experience people say “let’s get after some females tonight” etc. it’s objectifying in a lot of ways. I get why someone MIGHT view it negatively. Not excusing the girl’s behavior, just saying. I’m against ultra-PC culture because being too soft gets someone like Trump elected, but there’s an interesting argument about the word’s use to be made here
I've never felt right using the word female referring to human females. Never had anything to do with these alphabet people and their right to control which words everyone else uses, just always sounded too clinical.
I'm so triggered right now!!! How can someone be so inconsiderate and insensitive!? That bigot needs to grow up and realize this isn't 2005 anymore. The proper noun would be Womin (yes that's right, spelled so there is no "Men/Man" subjugation in the text), and ALL WOMIN, WHETHER CIS, TRANS, OMNI, OR OTHERWISE DESERVE TO BE TREATED WITH RESPECT. Isolating a specific group of people, whether intentional or unintentional, is disgusting and should be punishable by law as a criminal act! Probably some dumbass cracker white privilege mofo over here not realizing how hurtful and demeaning his words can be. SMFH. What's next? People not realizing "No can do" is racist towards Asian Americans?!?!?
HOW DARE YOU SAY SPECIES!!!!!! THAT WORD IS EXCLUSIONARY TO NON-LIVING MATTER!!!!!!!!!!!!! #rockshavefeelingstoo!!!!!!!!
well, well @AroundTheWorld Showtime's Homeland isn't Woke. The first episode of Season 8 (just released last month) has Claire Danes addressing a colleague as "female". Carrie is trans-exclusionary.
Both acted unprofessionally. The woman for derailing a business conversation and putting him on the defensive unnecessarily with something that could have been done in a side conversation, and the man for a less than ideal response. Granted the woman was more in the wrong but that doesn't matter. Both of them need to be patched into a conference call and told to work it out like professionals. They are suppose to be senior leaders - there's no time for that kind of stuff.
