If you suddenly had a major windfall, and you could retire, buy some acreage, and build a nice house................where would you choose to live (US only.....don't worry about total cost of ownership.........just pick a place that really has your heart)
On 8 footers at the K-3 elementary school, I was Barkley-esque. On 9 footers at the 4th grade courts, I could throw it down with authority. On 10 footers, I was Chris Paul-esque, but managed a knuckle or two over the rim on occassion.
I'm usually not on the line in a big fire, but on a smallish one, I was supposed to meet up with a crew. There were two ways in, one was a 90 minute drive around to come up through the bottom of the drainage and the other was a much shorter drive from up top. After getting on the radio and checking, I took off from up top. The vegetation was really tall, thick brush and you couldn't see much. The road was a series of switchbacks. After a bit, I heard them call me and say go back to the top. OK, but there's nowhere to turn around. So I backed uphill about 1/4 mile and finally found a place where I could do a 12 0r 14 point turn. As I was heading back out I could see the fire coming up the hill to where I had been. I was on the good side of probably 3-4 minutes. If I had busted an axle or had to keep backing up or popped a tire on a sharp rock I probably wouldn't be close to 20,000 posts. That was the only time I've had the heebie-jeebies about my situation. A very few others were concerning, but manageable.
I'd do what I'm in the process of doing, but more of it. Buy some good acreage on the upper Oregon Coast with enough room to build a house or two and leave it to my kids. We love the coast and on top of that, the Oregon coast and some of WA has a good chance of not being as affected by climate change as many other places, so I think acreage there will be worth a bunch in 50 years, giving my kids a good opportunity to stay or sell.
@rimrocker if you were in charge of the concession stand at either mmp,TC, NRG,what would be your ideal foods to sell?
Carne Asada tacos. That’s it. Vegetarians can pick the meat off just like I have to pick tomatoes off my burgers.
Thats an involved process and usually only for a medevac. You have to have a place for the copter to land, which is not easy to create in heavy vegetation and steep slopes. Add to that winds, smoke, and usually multiple people and you quickly get to a place where it is difficult. Best not to get in bad situations.
@rimrocker If you could run the country starting right now, what would be the first change you would make?
