Upgrade? Let's see who is hitting right now in the acls. No one. I think there is plenty of room to upgrade.

You still think the hitting is wonderful and we don't need better hitters?

Astros line up is chock full of great hitters. If you don’t understand that, then I don’t know what to say.

what @Snake Diggit said is true and even at that, Chirinos had a pretty high OPS among AL catchers.

Look back at the teams we played in August and September. Most were all .500 or below. I feel ya but now they're facing real pitching. If they wanna win it all they have to adjust to the better pitchers and get used to an opposing 14 man pitching staff with like 12 relievers. I hate the way the game is changing, but no excuses for this lineup. I'd take it over any team any day even though I'm frustrated as hell with them right now. One good game though is all they need to get rolling and the team confidence back.

I still wish Bregs was batting 2nd but I'm not the coach.

My best offer for Cole if I'm the Astros:

10 years- 300 million- structured as follows

    Year (age)- money
    1 (29)- $38,000,000
    2 (30)- $35,000,000
    3 (31)- $35,000,000
Player opt out which would mean 3 years- $108 million
    4 (32)- $35,000,000
    5 (33)- $32,000,000
    6 (34)- $30,000,000
Player opt out which would mean 6 years $205 million
    7 (35)- $30,000,000
    8 (36)- $25,000,000
    9 (37)- $20,000,000
    10 (38)- $20,000,000

If he has a JV like career then that's an absolute steal (or else he chooses to opt out after 6 years. Cole gets long term security, the Astros get to sign the best pitcher in baseball for a "paltry" $30,000,000 a year luxury tax calculation, Cole blows away the total guaranteed money for a pitcher deal while also having escape hatches along the way.

That's the kind of deal that you take if you are Gerrit Cole and want to be in Houston, and want a FMV deal. It's also a big time risk mitigation for someone who makes their living with their arm, transferring the risk for the rest of your career to the Astros as opposed to yourself. The Astros get the benefit of a "small" LT Calculation number for assuming that risk, and an assload of surplus value in the first 3 or 4 years if he does't get hurt and follows a normal aging curve.

No one is giving Cole or any other pitcher a deal approaching 10 years. Teams don't even give 7 year deals to pitchers anymore for the most part.

Do we have enough money to make this deal? You need find a deal to trade Greinke or others first before making an offer.
It looks like that it is not easy (30/70 chance) to keep him unless he wants to be here.

I get that this wouldn't happen. But if I'm the Astros that's the deal I would offer him that I think he might take, possibly, as opposed to doing something like 7 for 240/250- which is where I think he's going to end up.

You saw Boras do this with Harper btw- he took what- 13/330 over 10/300. Philly liked it to spread the numbers out. Boras got to say he got more than Manny, and Harper got paid an extra $30 million for his troubles/defering the money/spreading it out.

If they did that deal they could pay the luxury tax for 2 years and then reset at the end of 2021, without too many onerous penalties.

    here’s my offer:
    $240M/8yrs:
    2020: $40M $10M signing bonus
    2021: $40M
    Opt out
    2022-2027: $25M

For Cole, $240M blows away what the other 4 $200M pitchers have received (Kershaw, Greinke, Price, and Scherzer all got between $206M and $217M). It also gives him another shot to increase his earnings with the opt out.

For Houston, it maximizes their current window without severely limiting their options in the out years. If he gets hurt, insurance will cover most of the remaining money. If he declines so much he doesn’t opt out (unlikely), he only has to put up ~2.5 war to be worth his contract. The odds of that deal going really sour are low. If he opts out, Houston got a star player in his prime to sign a 2 year free agent deal.
