I think the issue is that writing sucks these days. Bring on all the controversial societal characters you want, but if you add good writing and performance we won't be able to look away as an audience. Keep the subject, improve the story, everyone's happy.

I hadn't noticed it with coming out, but I have noticed it with trans people showing up way out of proportion to reality. I am in the do what you want as long as you are not hurting anyone else camp, but its now to the point where I roll my eyes every time I see a trans person on a show.
