Dallas-born international basketball star Andre Emmett has been shot and killed, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The 37-year-old wowed hoops fans as the leading scorer of the BIG3 squad 3’s Company as recently as this season.

Emmett played four seasons at Texas Tech prior to his selection in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft. While he traveled the globe throughout his hoops career he did see action for two NBA squads across stints with the Grizzlies and Nets.

Most recently Emmett was seen tearing up the BIG3 where he scored 134 points in 2019, second only to Joe Johnson. Emmett won multiple player of the week honors.

Wow, I cannot believe they killed Andre Emmett. He brought Texas Tech Basketball back to prominence with Bobby Knight. This is so sad.

Around 2:30 a.m., Emmett was "approached by two unknown suspects as he sat in his vehicle in front of his residence in the 1800 block of N. Prairie Avenue. The suspects displayed a handgun and an altercation ensued, during which the victim was shot as he ran away from the suspects," Dallas police said in a statement.

A passerby saw Emmett several-hundred feet from his home and called 911. Emmett was transported a hospital, where he died, Dallas police said. Witnesses told police they saw two suspects flee the scene after getting into a white Chrysler 300.

That area is a lot like a lot of areas in Houston at the moment. Its getting gentrified and has a mix of wealth and poverty.

Quitely, the murder rate of Dallas has far surpassed Houston's, especially this year.

Agreed, but it's not that bad a part of town. I've been near there frequently, usually on the way to Jimmy's Food Store. Driven by there at 2 after the bars close, getting lost trying to get back to Central from lower Greenville.

It's not like he got shot near FairPark, or one of the streets named for states in S. Dallas.

Miserable tragedy. I hope the authorities find those responsible.

Not in particular, most of the time wiki does the trick. The information I'm referencing came from this article though.

But to give context, that's only as of August 1st this year, the overall average of all those rates will end up being significantly higher by end of the year.
