It's bad when the bartenders at the stadium know your name and drink of choice

    The question is relative.

Make him substantial offer, but it has a limit. Something like 6/$180

It's going to be north of $200 million.

Not advocating this at all, but I'm putting it out there. If the Astros offered Correa and Greinke to the Rays in the offseason could they get Wander Franco?

Then maybe that's your Gerrit Cole money.

    Who says no?

Rays will say no with their tighter budget.

What if the Astros throw in a few bucks?

I'm not so sure. In the new FA landscape we haven't seen a contract like that for a pitcher. Cole is better than Corbin or Darvish, so we'll have to see.

I agree, but that was also a different FA market.

I'd guess somebody does go to $200M, but I don't see it as a slam dunk.

    Not really.

The younger/“best of the best” are still going to get paid stupid money. It’s the other guys (past-prime, not the absolute best) that end up “suffering” (Keuchel).

Other comparisons are Sale’s extension last year and David Price’s deal 2 years ago.

is he better than ... say Chris Sale? if so,then he should get paid at least the same as Sale, if not more.

Nice idea. But I don’t think 2 years of Arb Correa and 2 years of $22M Greinke has near enough surplus value to net a mlb top 5 overall prospect. But you could probably get Brujan and Liberatore which would go a LONG way to rebuilding the farm.

But trading Greinke opens up another rotation hole. Plus I’m not sure Houston wants to help Tampa get better in the short term.

5 years, $145 million is Sale's current contract.

Pay the man. We’ve got 2 more seasons headlined by Verlander, Greinke, and McCullers. In 2022, we’ve got no headline pitchers.

Here is a list top paid MLB pitchers: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/rankings/starting-pitcher/

$25-$30 million per year is what they get paid.

Washington Nationals front office are the outlier here, since they are the owner of the two richest contracts, Strasburg and Scherzer. The Nationals also signed Corbin last offseason to a backend-ed contract. Strasburg looks to opting out this off-season, so they may interested in overpaying for Cole.

The FA pitching market last off-season was soft. There were no bidding wars for Corbin or Keuchel. It is like the league has learned its lesson about signing 30 year pitchers to long expensive contracts?

Having said that, the Astros extended Verlander for 2 years, $66 million. That is $33 million per year, which might set the market for Cole signing with Houston.

Singing 30+ year old past-prime or just all-star (not CYA contending) pitchers.

If Sale, Scherzer, Kershaw or Price were all the same age now that they were at the time of their FA/Extension, they would all get similar deals. The economics have certainly changed, but the best of the best (or the ones with the most perceived long-term upside) get paid well.

Any pitching deal more than 3 years is a major risk. There hasn't been a pitcher in history who's lived up to that sort of deal. Scherzer may come close, if he can avoid arm trouble. Same with Kershaw.

Chris Sale would have been 31 when his current extension kicks in, Cole will only be 29 next season. It doesn't sound like much difference but it's 2 extra prime seasons.

Teams clearly don't want to pay guys past 35 anymore, but he won't turn 35 until a possible 7th season. Given 30 million or so is the minimum going rate for aces, 6/180 is basically the starting point to even get your name in the hat If I'm his camp. No pitcher is ever a safe bet, but you should get at least 4-5 peak Cole years before age becomes a factor. That's the main reason he's gonna get a huge deal.

To keep Cole, it’s going to cost 33-40 million a year for 5-6 years.

I don’t think any team will give him a 7-8 year contract, those days are over.

I see the Astros offering 6 years 33 per, or 5 years 37 per. for Cole.
Greinke, Reddick on the trading block.

Dodgers, Angels can offer more. Dodgers and Astros can offer continual WS contention.
    Cole is from southern Cal.
I think it’s between the Dodgers and Astros.

I believe Coles market to be somewhere between $160M/6yrs and $250M/10yrs.

Not in the 33-40 AAV range. I could see a team going the 7-8 range as a means lower the AAV.
