So it's acceptable to you that Trump is an "awful" person because all politicians are. I get it. Character doesn't matter in a President. It's about performance? I'm just wondering how Trump supporters grade him, because I know you guys give him an A+ for what he is doing to/for the country.

Does it matter if a president is unable to put together a functioning cabinet because it is a merry go round that has record-shattering turnover?

Does it matter if a president hand picks advisors who are subject matter experts in areas like foreign policy and finance/economy and then disregards them?

Do you think it was a good idea for Trump to aggressively announce additional tariffs against China, only to delay them until after the holidays because of fears it might hurt the economy?

Since the border is so important, I'm guessing it doesn't really matter the rhetoric he uses (no matter how inflammatory, bigoted, or assholic) or any collateral damage because of that rhetoric, so long as there's a push in that direction. After all, all politicians are "awful" people, so this is just tit for tat.

Since he can't do it to Melania, he's doing it to the country.

No, politicians are not inherently awful people, not sure why you think that...maybe its just the ones you follow?

(Hint - Saying all politicians are “awful” is just a way of leveling the playing field, taking character completely out of the discussion, and allowing people to keep supporting trump.)

This is pretty much the only defense Trump supporters have now. "Both sides are bad".

Donald Trump is a horrible person.

However a lot of people will not care if he pursues what they want politically.

I would argue he is the most damaging President in the last 150 years....... and that has nothing to do with him party and everything to do with how he has gutted the checks and balances and removed any sense of country first.

Still waiting for Dachuda, Mickfry or someone on the Trump side to respond to my post above on how trump folks grade him so highly. I suspect I won't get a response.

It would be far better if we could get some intellectual honesty. An honest response should read something like:

    - Trump is a jerk, insensitive, probably racist. He really should stop running his mouth and saying insensitive things.
    - Trump doesn't seem to know what he is doing. He is all over the place with his views. He can't manage people. I don't like how he tweets non stop, lies, and blames everybody for everything. I actually wish he would stop.
    - But I you know what, I'm ok with all of that because the country was headed in the wrong direction. All we read and hear about is this group or that group complaining about white people, or how they are discriminated against. I'm tired of it. Trump is going over the top to turn back the clock to 1990, 1980 or some time back then, when there wasn't constant chatter about diversity, equality, minorities, where it wasn't OK for LGBT to be in my face. The country was so much better back then. Back then it was more about working hard and overcoming obstacles, etc.
    - The truth is that I really don't care about the damage to the country or the harm to other groups of people, so long as Trump is able to stem the tide and turn back the clock to a better time.

I'd love to be wrong, but I think that summarizes a lot of what's out there.
Actually, I'm hoping its more of that, rather than huge numbers of racist people who not only support trump as an ends to a means, but who actually want the full throated divisiveness.

Trump couldn't have happened before the era of segmented and targeted news media. 30 or 40 years ago, The Donald would have imploded before the election.

Once you "choose" your side, everything you allow past your cognitive filters reinforces the side that you've decided on, because that is how your news providers maintain their user base. If they gave you news that upset your world view, you'd go somewhere else.

Everybody perceives the world through and is held in their lane by a funhouse mirror filter of their own design. And they trust what they are fed, because they chose the source in the first place.

Plenty of people have tailored their news in such a way so that all they allow in is news about what an awesome President Donald Trump is, and how evil forces have waged a totally deranged smear campaign to bring him down. And, of course, to be fair, plenty have tailored the exact opposite.

    Garbage In, Garbage Out.

Confirmation bias is real, but as you noted, what's going on is much more intentional. And that's the trouble. The country is getting dumber and less intellectually honest.

I mean even I could rationalize some practical reasons why Trump is their guy but it's never discussed by his supporters on here.

He got to handpick two conservative SCOTUS judges to appease the pro-life crowd that hopes for abortions to be overturned. He might very well get to pick a third if Ginsburg dies. 3 potential lifetime appointments who get to interpret the law of the land.

He also was able to pick lifetime appointed judges on the state level with a more heavily conservative leaning interpretation of the law.

He repealed Obamacare removing the tax penalty for family's like @TheresTheDagger who thought mandating healthcare on a federal level was unlawful and too expensive for his and his family's needs. He instead thinks skeleton healthcare policies like min coverage auto insurance is ethical as young people never get sick. Never mind that his family has likely broke even under Trump's economy even with the recent tax cuts that probably minimally benefited his family and is paying more in other expenses through tariffs on the consumer level.

Trump deregulated a lot of consumer protection laws which in theory was sold to supporters as a means to remove red tape from small businesses so that they could thrive. Unfortunately under a Trump led economy, small businesses haven't grown as anticipated likely due Trump's careless economic agenda. Instead businesses aren't held liable from consumer protection laws like inflated interest rates to things like Payday loans.

If an economic investor, again in theory a Trump led economy has benefited you, although with a looming recession, I think even Trump supporting economists see the end is nigh.

In short though, if you're conservative, about the only positive things you can say Trump has done is choose two conservative judges on the SCOTUS level as well as make lifetime appointments for judges on a state level with a conservative leaning interpretation of the law. That's it. Literally everything else has been an absolutely disaster to even his most ardent supporters.

Under any methodology, he is the worst president ever. I will concede he is not as openly racist as Andrew Johnson but it's only Thursday.
