It's an interesting intersection with one of the other controversies of the day -- how we've damaged these soldiers in our foreign adventures and then marginalize them when they come home if they can't be normal. It could be that he's have impulse control and anger management problems from a brain injury and he needs a cure, not prison.

If there was a president or congressperson that had a set of balls to tell moscow mitch to get off his arse and do his job there would have been help for Vets like him and others to get help.

Good luck finding a cure for someone that has a brain injury, a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon and thought it was okay to cave in a child's skull (in public as well). That person needs to not be in society. I am biased as I worked as a federal prosecutor and I have seen how much damage one person like this can do. From destroying their own family, raising children that become criminals, to spousal abuse, DUI, assault and sometimes multiple murders. The truth is that the issue isn't that there are a lot of people out there like that, the problem is that each one of them commits a high number of crimes and is incredibly destructive.

I get that. But it's terribly tragic that we have a generation of warriors that we've sent to fight wars that didn't need fighting and some have come back with debilitating injuries that wreck their lives, and society's response is "they're a danger, we can't let them walk around in society." We can't fix the man's brain now, it's not so easy. But if there's a president to criticize here, it's probably more George Bush and Barack Obama than it is Donald Trump.

I feel uncomfortable pegging this incident as "ptsd" from combat. From my experience, signs of post traumatic stress from being exposed to a armed conflict or a hostile region where any random Individual in a crowded market place might have a suicide vest underneath them are having triggered responses to sudden loud noises or being uncomfortable, sweaty, jittery etc in crowded areas with a lot of random strangers around you.

This just seems like a reaction to jingoist brainwashing rather than combat stress. I'm pretty confident that the lawyer is stating this just to generate some level of empathy for the guy even if it isn't accurate.

You probably know more about it than I do, given your experience. But the lawyer doesn't claim PTSD, but traumatic brain injury. I haven't found anything public on what might have caused it for this guy and I can't even figure out which theatre he was stationed in. But as I understand it, even the concussive force of handling a rocket launcher in training exercises has been shown to have injurious effects like a concussion. And recurring concussions in combat and in sports (especially football) has been linked to anger management and impulse control problems later in life. So in the abstract I think it's possible he has a brain injury that makes him do rash and violent things. But I don't actually know anything about his case to say.

Yes you are correct in terms of traumatic brain injury caused by back blasts from rocket launchers and explosions in general. TBI definitely could be a factor here if he suffered from some sort of concussion. I just read "ptsd" and assumes it was stress related and not concussion and brain injury related. The later definitely could play a factor in impulse control.

The guy should have been in jail in the first place. This is what happens when you get soft on crime.

100% a tragedy. Why it’s so important to vote for a candidate this upcoming election who isn’t content with maintaining the forever wars to fight terror or protect our interests..er I mean allies.

20 vets commit suicide everyday, and potentially like the man of topic in this thread, can also be doing other terrible things.

Yes I agree Trump should to stand up and own it instead of blaming others.
