Oswalt and Berkman drop off the ballot.

I guess that we will leave it to the Player Committee to clean up the BBWAA's mess wrt voting in the other great relievers.

I'm surprised. First unanimous HOFer is a relief pitcher...

I'm a firm believer that relief pitchers don't belong in the HOF, unless of course their name is Mariano Rivera.

    First Curry... now this.

IIHC, fourth time in history with four inductees. Third time in four years.

I agree. Heard a talk show yesterday going through the %'s of so many great players, nowhere near 100%. Including Willie Mays, Hank Aaron (!), Teddy ballgame, on and on. The whole thing is pretty weird. But at least this is a HOF (compared to those of basketball or football) that can actually generate any discussion or interest. Kudos to them for that.

Rivera is absolutely worthy of the HOF and being 1st ballot...but for a reliever to be the 1st to get 100%? Just doesn't feel right when you consider the players who didn't.

The changes to the Hall of Fame electorate in recent years are showing great results. Griffey got 99.3 in 2016, only 3 people didn't vote for him.

It's no doubt odd that a closer is the first guy, but it's really a positive sign overall. I think the true luminaries will come extremely close to 100%, with more unanimous guys. Jeter may get it next year.

The MLB voting is now comical.

One voter chose not to vote at all. He doesn't think that relievers should be in the hall of fame, yet he also thought Rivera would be the first unanimous choice and didn't want his personal view to cost him that chance. By him not voting for anyone, Rivera was unanimous.

Anybody who was a no doubt first ballot hall of famer was going to get 100% of the vote this year. Mariano Rivera just happened to be that guy. Derek Jeter will get 100% next year. If Babe Ruth was up for the vote he would have gotten it too.

They purged enough of the blowhards that didn’t think anyone should get 100% so that this could finally happen. It’s not a knock against anyone who went in before him and it isn’t a case of “Mariana Rivera needs to be the guy who does it.” It’s just the way it worked out.

Agreed. The never been a 100% thing is more a product of the blowhards and other random voters making it so the super obvious don’t get 100%. Example being this year when Placido Polanco got 2 votes for some reason.

World-renowned Philly lardass Bill Conlin didn't vote for Nolan Ryan because he "wouldn't want him starting Game 7 of the World Series".
