Second fewest innings, 8th worst era, and 5th worst batting average against among closers 11.74 ERA and 2.217 WHIP in the playoffs AND ONE PUNCH TO HIS OWN FACE.
Not saying he was good in the playoffs. The vast majority of his appearances were not good. During the 2018 regular season, his ERA in save situations is the best among all closers. His WHIP in save sitatutions is the best or near the best or all closers. Your turn.
He has 18 appearances and 9 saves. So half of his appearances he is great and the other half he is steaming garbage. Wonderful. I'm sure he will just keep racking up those 1 and 2 out saves with a 3 run lead that Hinch hands him.
Counting the one he had against the Indians where he came in with a runner in 3rd and one out in a 3-0 game, he has a grand total of one of those this season. And in 6 of those 9 ‘other games’ he has given up a total of 1 hit. So yeah, those 6 were ‘steaming garbage’
He has the 2 out save against the Indians with a 3 run lead and a one out save against the Twins with a 2 run lead. Giles has closed out a grand total of ONE game with a one run lead. Devenski has the same number of 1 run saves. So 8 of his 9 saves have been with a 2 run lead or bigger and 2 of those he was required to get less than 3 outs. And he's tied for 15th in saves. Tell me this.... how many closers would you rather have than Ken Giles?
I clearly wrote he had 1 2 out 3 run save. His one against the Twins was a 2 run save which wasn't what you said. If I could magically have another current closer without expending any resources, I could probably come up with a handful. If the Astros had to give something up, I'd have to see the cost before making that comment. Can't blame a closer for lack of one run save opportunities. There have been two games all year where a reliever has come into the ninth with a one run lead.
