If you could insert one Rockets player from the past on the current team, who would it be and why?

Artest only made one all star game and was a role player when he was on the Rockets. The post all star Artest who played as a role player for the Rockets would mesh so well with the current Rockets that it is difficult to not dream about how much he would make the Rockets better. He would essentially be PJ but with a much better offensive game. I remember Artest being a Rocket killer when he was with the Kings. If his shot was falling then he was damn near impossible to beat.

The first rule in op’s post clearly says no all stars though. Regardless if he just made it once, that would still be considered an all star to me atleast.
Maybe op didn’t know Artest made it once

Mike Newlin for obviously reasons https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/mike-newlin-has-something-on-his-mind/

    An excerpt...
"Even more surprising than his winning ways were his determined concentration and wild aggressiveness, both of which were reflected in his appearance. His hair was short in those days and, combined with his broad, flat boxer’s nose, his slightly twisted mouth, and his sullen and threatening eyes, it made him look, in the flush of competition, like some back-alley fighter of long experience. And like a back-alley fighter, he unleashed himself on his opponent with real fury. He would do anything to win. If he could save a ball by diving after it, scraping chin, knees, and elbows in the process, he would dive without hesitation, in fact with enthusiasm, as if he actually enjoyed the pain. Nor was he especially careful of his opponents’ well-being. If they were between him and the ball, tough cheese for them."

I think I'd take Battier, even if Artest is on the table, because in addition to his skills and fit, he's smart and well-grounded. Those are two things we need right now. Russ is hotheaded, and James is thin-skinned and flaky. Horry had temperamental issues, too. Shane could help pull the team together.

Horry is far and away the player I would choose for this iteration of the Rockets. At 6'10 he would immediately add the size everyone is clamoring for.

While never an all star he becomes HOF level performer player in the playoffs. In his last 3 seasons with Rockets, he shot almost 40% from 3 (4-6 points higher than regular season), his defense also ramps up (steals, deflections, blocks, etc.) and his clutch gene is activated like no other.

Horry was so clutch in postseason that the best coaches desperately wanted him on their teams. That clutch mentality and being X Factor in playoffs is immeasurable.

Horry was not called Big Shot Bob for nothing.

    https://lakeshowlife.com/2013/09/15/weird-confounding-legendary-career-robert-horry/

He was the first “3 and d” player that has become so en vogue nowadays, being the first player ever in NBA history to make 100 3’s and have 100 steals and 100 blocks in a season (1995-96). His size and wingspan allowed him to be effective as a weakside shotblocker, as an offensive rebounder, and in the passing lanes.

Hear me out here. This player was not an all star when he was with the Rockets and left acrimoniously, but Scottie Quitten had the absolute perfect skillset to play with our lineup. Length, handles, shooting, elite and versatile defense.

Robert Horry is the perfect option because of his length, shooting, and versatility.

Jerry Lin. Because he will never die on this forum... Plus he has championship experience!!

If not Horry, then Ellie. We need a Junkyard Dog to do the dirty work and want the ball when no one else wants it.

I read, “no all stars” under “rules” and figured that was a rule. I really don’t need you to bend the rule for me.

    sooooo.. I pick Hakeem.

This forum these days is embarrassing. Shooting is more important than ever in basketball. So of course Rafer Alston is the one choice and easy choice.

Right. You could always go to another forum to avoid that awful embarrassment feeling. Cheers.
