A thoughtful post, but you're missing the welfare state component. The ostensible "refugees" from MENA, that are in Germany, Sweden, France, UK, are there to benefit from those countries' overly generous welfare states.

Immigrants into the US in the 19th century had to assimilate if they wanted to avoid poverty.

 

I'd prefer to stick to the US, an area both of us probably understand a lot better. The one I know the best, France, I'd say isn't as generous to refugees as you'd like to make out.

The refugees who come to the US have several factors driving them here, but the desire to sit on their asses and have other people buy them stuff doesn't appear to be one of them as far as I can tell.

 

That's fair. I guess I was reacting to the notion in the greater topic that ethnic enclaves or ghettoes arise entirely because it's people don't want to assimilate or contribute to the greater whole.

I'd like to believe second gen Americans become more assimilated but that's not a given either

Somewhat relatedly, I heard that she was "found" by Democratic bigwigs when she was protesting the Dakota pipeline. Not sure if that's true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.

 

She was doing screen tests to be in a Democrat issue-related campaign advertisement.

 

She is fearless and so often correct, it is great when congress people are not tainted by big business or in the republicans case russia.

AOC has a huge megaphone to speak to the right who follow her much more than the left voters do. Speaking often and speaking loudly doesn’t mean speaking out your a$$.
