Or Tilman got smart from a business angle, knew about Chris Paul's possible injury at the start of the season. He just went to save his money because he predicted this won't be a 'running back to the WCF' type of season. From a business standpoint it's impeccable.
Tbh, my mind is on the years to come from here. Come next season does the team get younger but healthier and better, especially now that Harden has entered his prime. Or will it still be the team where he has to score 50 points every game because of injuries to the team and whatever. I think it's a crossroads for Morey next season.

Dear Bedwetters: Daryl Morey has made a very large bet that if you put together two hall-of-fame guards who can handle the ball, create, score, and distribute, you can then find plenty of shooters, defenders, and big men who are happy to play with them, often for modest contracts. Amazingly, you can trade some of these role players, or even let them walk, and still have plenty of alternatives available to take their places. You can lose a Beverley and find a Rivers. You can survive the loss of an Ariza, a Mbah a Moute, even -- gasp -- a Danuel House. Morey's bet isn't threatened by role players who leave or reject contract offers. It's threatened when one of the two core players can't play.
Of course they would be battling for Zion right now. Capela won't get his own without premier playmaker, CP3 is injured old man who would miss half the season(and that's not a luck thing, that's just comes with CP every season) and Gordon is glorified chucker why you assume they would be any good? Even Dallas trash roster looks better if you take out Doncic
Hoestly even with CP3 Gordon and Capela we are barely a playoff team without Harden. Heck I dont think we even make the playoff especially with CP3 always being injured.
