The last time a socialist-like individual was elected POTUS, it nearly resulted in a coup. However, I'm not real sure how serious the details given by Butler are but it remains a possibility that he was telling the truth.

It almost happened to the POTUS of Venezuela.

It could happen here, led by Cheney and the Koch Bro.

With an obstructionist congress, why would a coup even be necessary?

Since Hell would have frozen over, I suppose anything's possible. So I'll give it just slightly less than Bernie's chances of being prez......let's round up and call it zero.

    dumb thread deserves dumb post.

No higher than the chances if Cruz, Clinton, Trump, or any of the other clowns are elected.

Chickenhawks will talk big on the radio. Useful idiots will be convinced to pretend they are tough guys like in Oregon. Internet warriors will post vague threads on internet forums, hinting that they support such action, or think it likely. People with genuine responsibility will be more responsible, no matter how much they hate the guy.

I would say the guy can't get elected nationally, but the Republicans seem to be setting up a situation to try and prove that they can find a candidate with an even more limited demographic appeal of their own.

Im not sure which president your referring too but Rossevelt used socialist platforms too pull the country out of the Great Depression, and has stood as one of the best presidents in US history. Sanders has called FDR far more socialist than he intends on going.

I believe in Bernie, he's been doing this for over 50 years, he's been through the ringer of every spectrum there is too face. He's highly educated and his policies have great track records. His civil rights work and protesting..pictures of him marching behind MLK, etc

Elizabeth Warren as his VP, would do far greater things for the future of the economy than Clinton can even dream possible. She'd out campaign Hilary

In my perfect world, Warren would be running for POTUS and Sanders would be her VP.

Sanders is not a socialist. He either has no idea what that word means or just lies and says it because he think its cool. None of his policies are that of an economist socialist.

Either that or he has been calling himself a "democratic socialist", which turns out, is not really socialism at all.

This. Separation of powers largely removes the drive for a coup and barring a a very unlikely massive change in the Congress Sanders' agenda is DOA.

If Sanders' wins what my guess is prepare for much more gridlock and sharper partisanship, yes even more than now. That said the military is under civilian control. Al Haig's infamous remark to Nixon "You still have the army" during Watergate only emphasizes that a coup would most likely start from the executive civilian side rather than within military ranks. Further the US military has done a good job of weeding out officers who are unlikely to follow the chain of command. Colin Powell is more representative of military officers, who even though skeptical of civilian leadership are still more inclined to follow civilian leadership than want to take over.

Or he doesn't confuse socialism with communism as others do, and not only knows exactly what it is, but has seen it in practice in prosperous nations in Europe for decades.

If Bernie Sanders is selected by over 51% of the american voters then I'd say that's more of a mandate than anything.
