    Freaking awful.

The author comes across as a complete dick and shows abosolutely no remorse in essentially killing a human being (and a troubled one, at that).

And for what? A better news story?

It was uncalled for to go against the subject's wishes and write a very personal piece on information that was clearly not meant to be made public.

    This is absolutely sickening.

And by the way, let me clarify my previous post, I understand outing Dr. V as a liar, that's justified. Clearly you can't keep the lying a secret.

But the transgender outing is what bothers me. What is at all necessary to reveal that piece of information?

Well the subject used that female name (Vanderbilt) to defraud investors. It would be difficult to discuss the identity change (from a male to female name) and leave out the transgendered aspect.

The guy killed himself. Was it a dick move to out him? Sure, but committing suicide is the fault of the person who did it - and no one else. Even if he had mental health issues which lead to it, he made the conscious decision to kill himself.

This is true, I retract that statement. Was scratching my head reading my own post over again ha. Didn't mean to work it like that.

he posted this article, that outs Dr. V, after the suicide correct ( as the suicide is mentioned in the article)? The title of the thread suggests otherwise. I would find it very difficult to blame the author for the suicide if he had yet to act. I would find it difficult to blame the author even if the article had come out beforehand.

She knew the article was coming out, and what it would say about her. So from a timing standpoint the suicide could have been a result of the article. Of course, she probably killed herself for being exposed as a comprehensive fraud; or for the all-consuming self loathing that spawned that behavior in the first place.

For a remotely credible news story, the only justification for months of work or the paycheck on continued employment that comes with it.

I guess this is where we watch Commodore intervene on the side of the pathological liar and place this in D&D? Is that what this is? YAYAYYAY cool.

I think we can forget our respective alignments for this particular story. It's an interesting enough story to merit serious discussion, and I think Commodore's OP was meant to introduce the topic and its most attention grabbing details rather than take a particular side.

I don't know, you may be right - maybe we'll leave it to the Commodore to clarify with his signature brand of exposition.

Very interesting article that could have been written with a little more sadness and remorse (his attempts didn't really do it for me). While Dr. V was troubled and was leading a conflicted and desperate life, the author clearly played an indirect role in her suicide, and he came off rather unapologetic about it.

I also think the transgender part was a little overblown, especially with the way he revealed it, and it ended up overshadowing Dr. V's lies about her past.

EDIT: Sheez, the hypocrisy of the people attacking him on twitter is incredible. https://twitter.com/search?q=@calebhannan&src=typd&f=realtime

I don't know... I truly just don't know how people can blame someone else for a suicide. Unless they put a loaded gun in their hand or slid the noose around their neck, they aren't any more responsible then any other ******* they crossed in their lives.

**** happens, that's life. We all go through stuff that sometimes might mean it is easier to just check out - but grow up and take responsibility. Several of my extended family members have committed suicide in the past, and I don't feel sorry for them - I'm pissed at them for being weak and taking the easy way out while their loved ones have to pick up the pieces. But that's just me.

I know depression and mental illness isn't an easily quantifiable subject matter - I've just always viewed suicide as a cowardice act regardless of circumstance.
