    Had a similar situation with a neighbor the other night.

    He came to my house and pounded on the door at 10pm. I opened the door but left the screen door locked. He said some one tried to steal him rims and asked if I saw anyone. I said no and he asked if we could talk.

    I don't really know the guy so I told him to wait and got my gun, gave it to my GF and told her if something happened to shoot first then call the cops.

    I went and got my pit bull, put her on a leash and went outside to talk. Everything was legit and we exchanged numbers. Cool guy but I wasn't taking chances.

    Not saying you did anything wrong at all (far from), but what sad times we live in. I guess I'm lucky we know all our neighbors right now, but that's pretty unusual in 2013.

    Yeah, this guy had just moved in. Hadn't talked to him before that night. I actually had a beer with him last night and we're cool now but a stranger is a stranger until I've had enough time to measure him up and ask questions.

    Yeah, totally agree. Maximum price of being careful = maybe looking a little weird.

    Maximum price of not being careful enough = horrible outcome.

    The fact that he asked if you were a doctor first would have set off my spidey senses in a heartbeat. He obviously figured you had money, and were probably somebody that could either be robbed, or taken for a ransom. You did the right thing by not being overly aggressive though. The last thing you want is for someone like that to know where you live, and have a vendetta against you.
