Amare Stoudemire to coach Canada

Amar'e Stoudemire's going back to Israel.

Stoudemire will serve as an assistant coach for the Canadian men's basketball team in the Maccabiah Games in Israel this summer.

The competition will be held for two weeks in mid-July.

"From a pure basketball perspective, to have someone who's competed at the highest level of basketball with us is invaluable," said Alex Brainis, the head of the Canadian delegation for the Maccabiah Games.

Stoudemire is currently rehabbing a knee injury and hopes to be back during the postseason.The Knicks forward has been active off the court during his rehabilitation. He plans to unveil a documentary titled "Amar'e Stoudemire: In The Moment" on April 19.

Stoudemire is also no stranger to Israel.

In the summer of 2010, Stoudemire visited the country to explore his Jewish heritage.

At the time, Stoudemire said he had "Hebrew roots" through his mother, Carrie. So he spent a week in the country to learn about its history, language and religions.

He has been involved with the Canadian men's open division team for the past year and a half, according to Brainis.

The team's coach, John Dore, is a close friend of Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald. Grunwald served as an assistant coach for the men's open team under Dore in 2005 and introduced the coach to Stoudemire last season.

"He was thrilled when we approached him. He fully embraced the concept," Brainis said.

Stoudemire is expected to be with the team for a three-day training camp prior to the competition. He will also be on the team's bench for its two-week competition starting July 17.

The New York Times first reported Stoudemire's involvement in the Maccabiah Games, an international Jewish athletic competition held every four years in Israel.

"The Games in general will benefit from his involvement, not just Maccabi Canada," Brainis said.

You do know that there are black Jews right? Especially in Ethiopia where according to tradition the Ark of the old alliance is kept. Stoudemire's mother is Jewish, hence Amare is Jewish too.
