Really not optimistic about Yao. Certainly makes good points, but the conspiracy theory side of me wonders how much of the Yao negativity is because now he's a free agent.

I don't think free agency has much to do with it. Yao himself didn't sound all that optimistic-- he's trying, but need to wait and see test results in August/September, etc.-- and Yao has pretty much said he intends to stay in Houston. I don't think he's in a situation similar to that of, for example, Carl Landry a couple years ago.

I think it's just the fact that nobody know what the future holds so McHale isn't going to make predictions.

Let's also not forget that even Yao said with another injury will come retirement one year ago. The pessimism was there long ago.

CH, withmustard... you guys are probably right... I just have to think that if some promise is shown in his health that there could be a big difference in what is offered for Yao and what he's expecting. We'll see.

our focus should not be on yao any more. if he comes back, it's icing on the cake but of coz has to be a reasonable price. the #1 priority is to get a superstar. i know it's tough but we have no other choice. to win big, it's a must do thing.

two things i found should represent what mchale coaching looks like. he likes big man who can do both ends. he likes his team to play strong defense. he mentioned those two in his introduction and interview afterwards again and again.

I think he OWES it to the Rockets, his fans and himself to play for the minimum. I think it would be quite petty to argue over a few million considering he's made at least 34 million for his last three games.(6 half-games).
I have no reason to believe money has anything to do with his return.
