The star players I would trade Sengun for, to make this topic somewhat more interesting since I think most of us agree Giannis isn't the move, would include:

Definitely, but 110% absolutely for certain not going to happen
    Luka
    Wemby
    SGA
    Jokic
    Cade

Definitely, but almost zero chance of it happening this offseason
    Ant Edwards
    Tatum
    Maxey
    Jalen Johnson
    Chet

On the fence*, still extremely low odds of it happening
    Jaylen Brown
    Donovan Mitchell
    Bam
    Booker

Giannis ain't on the list. Note also that every single one of these guys is in his 20s except Jokic.

I think the fact that none of these guys feels very plausible for us to acquire right now for a 23-year-old 2x all-star even if we include a couple of draft picks shows how difficult it is to acquire a "franchise player" via trade in today's CBA.

*because these guys are all about to turn 30, on huge contracts, and none of them is 100% for certain good enough to be the #1 option on a championship team

If you can get a top 5 player in the NBA at the age of 31, you would be crazy not to move forward. Does a duo of Giannis/KD push the Rockets into the Thunder category? Who knows. In the regular season, probably not. In the playoffs over a 7 game series? The Thunder were almost taken down by Denver and Indiana just last year when they won 67 games.

The Spurs have had tremendous luck in the draft and won a franchise player and then another number 2 pick as a consolation prize last year. They are now considerably ahead of the Rockets if the Rockets stay put.

The current Rockets team is not going anywhere. Let's see what they do in the playoffs, but would anyone be surprised if they don't make it past the 1st round again? They are not contenders but if you can replace Sengun and some future picks for a top 5 player in the NBA, it can potentially get them there. A 31 year player going on 32 still has a good amount of years left to be effective. 27/9/5 is certainly not washed up. It's top 5.

Unfortunately, Sengun isn’t worth that in a draft either an elite top 3

This team isn’t a Giannis away from a title and we’d probably have to gut the roster to get him. The end result of a Giannis team might not be much better than what we have now.

I have been afraid of this since the offseason and don't want it. Typical org ass saving move that fits Stone and Ime.

Sengun, FVV, 2028, 2030, 2032. Giannis duplicates a lot of the Barkley/Rodman hustle cleanup that we reserve for Amen in dunks and rebounds. This neuters Amen to a big degree because of the overlap in style of play. Have to hope that Jabari can be the Stretch 5 like Bosh instead of molding him after KD. He would need to bulk up and rebounding would be far more important. Amen and Adams would have to be interchangeable because Giannis, Amen, and Adams cannot coexist on the court. Giannis game is all athletic so when he is dinged up and not playing that problem exacerbates. His D is not the same and he will have problems in whatever system we mold around him. Cannot shoot so our main problem and assets are gone to fix that glaring weakness. Okogie, Holiday alright for backup level shooters but Tari is not sufficient as a 6th man that is his natural role. He is a wing finding his way. We need another scorer that can handle the ball like a Harden could have done for us. We have problems scoring and putting up 3s.

If we fail on Giannis I see us moving to Kyrie. This team needs shooters so FVV, DFS at the least need to be up off this team.

Counterpoint, he is currently the best player that seems available that we could actually win a title with. He was in top 5 MVP conversation for the first half of the season so I'm not sure why some are acting like he is some washed superstar. There are definite injury concerns, not dismissing those. The Rockets will do their due diligence in the off season as maybe the playoffs shake some stars/superstars loose.

I want to see how the playoffs go before I lean into where I stand.

Forget about Kevin Durant. It tells you a whole looooot about the state of the so called youth movement, if you are simply not close to being competitive with another crippled / tanking team on a nightly basis, with all of your “young core” healthy.

It goes far beyond the obvious coaching problem, isn’t it?

And if your solution is to tie the majority of your capital in two aging stars in this current state of the league, both from a talent and a financial perspective, it is a recipe for disaster.

Amen and Giannis on the same team. I'd rather die.

Dreymond and Andre Igudola was on the same team. Both started. GS had two great shooters, we have KD.

Separate this from the Rockets for a moment.

Do people actually think that any team trading a giant package of young players + 3-4 frp's for the right to pay Giannis $70M/yr for his age 33-37 seasons, is a good idea?

I'm not even sure Milwaukee signing him to that extension themselves would be a good idea. And they don't even have to trade for him!

Giving away your asset stockpile for the right to do it is absurd.

They are both better shooters than Amen. Amen is a non-shooter.

Reed is a streaky shooter. Reminds me of some guy.

these Giannis takes will look very different after the Rockets finish embarrassing themselves in the playoffs and get knocked out in the 1st round…watch

this “young core” that we have is nothing special…we got fcked in the draft every single year

It will happen whether you want it to or not. What else would explain Stone punting the whole season at the trade deadline? He needs his entire war chest. The only question is how much he'll give up and what he'll do afterwards to fill in the gaps. Me personally, I have low confidence. I think you will definitely lose Sengun and Reed, but I bet he'll give up Bari too and we'll end up with a Amen-Giannis-Adams lineup that's last in the league in 3s. Even worse, I see Stone including our own picks too, which will affect our ability to rebuild when KD-Giannis-FVV-Adams age out.

    Only old school mentality, sure.

Here's the thing: it is not going to take a giant package of young players + 3-4 frps to acquire Giannis.

My guess is 2-4 FRPs or equivalent value for Giannis. 2 if he's very selective on team (maybe even 1). 3-4 if he's not. If Sengun is valued around 3 FRPs, Sengun and a FRP are likely competitive with any other trade offer. Maybe things open up a little in the offseason, but GSW was really the only team that had 4 tradeable 4 FRPs at the deadline that may have offered 4 FRPs for Giannis.

If it ends up being something like Sengun and JSJ for Giannis, Cronin will shiv Stone in Las Vegas during Summer League.

The Rockets are not looking like a strong contender.

As long as we’re becoming a Nursing Home :D (Green, Durant, Fred, Adams, DFS, Capela)

Give me 35yo Kawhi over 32yo Giannis.
But we don’t know what’s gonna happen there. Is he gonna get punished? Clippers punished? Take away draft picks? Void his contract? Suspend him?
