Area to avoid in Houston?

I love the heights lived there for years

 

You will have a blast, most places are good, but places like Greenspoint are BAD, any part of town has a bad "spot" but overall, you will be fine. Your flying solo and not sure if you're a guy or gal but take precautions as you would anywhere, by and large the folks are hospitable but be careful at night, don't put yourself in a bad situation as in any city. I travel to Mexico all the time solo, and I can normally tell if I am in a good part of town or not based on my Spidey senses ...............we have the best tex mex food in all of Texas and the BBQ will melt in your mouth, if you catch an Astros game stay downtown and enjoy the atmosphere before and after, you will have a blast and welcome to HTOWN

 

If you're doing touristy stuff, you'll be fine. Check out NASA.

Avoid the Sunnyside neighborhood in SE Houston where I grew up.

I like it too. I live in the Woodlands but it's definitely a place my wife and I enjoy when we can.

 

Yeah, I lived there during a big transition phase. Still had folks working on the Eastside with blue collar jobs and we had young families move in.

19th was getting redevelop and 20th/White Oak/11th starting to evolve to what it is today.

Definitely a mix of old school heights and new school.

I can make a case for living in

River Oaks
Memorial
The Woodlands
Rice Village

That is surrounded by commute time/type of networking/recreational

If you are in your 20s you can definitely make a case for other central areas like

Montrose
The Heights
Midtown/Eado

When I lived in all those places I went to games/concerts multiple times a week

 

100% with you. When we were going out we used to live at Pub Fiction in in Midtown and Bakers St and Bronx bar in Rice Village. Used to see Matt Maloney all the time.

 

Houston is so vast and areas that used to be the hood are now gentrified, so anyone with older knowledge of areas (me) wouldn't be able to give you a concise overview. 20-30 years ago I would have told you to avoid X Y Z only to find out that there are million dollar houses there now.

Like someone else said, better to ask about where you want to go.

 

If you're in the Heights go to Truth for BBQ. If on the North Rudy's

 

If you like Asian food head down Bellaire, Hong Kong City Mall and such stuff

 

Houston is a great place to live but it's never really been a touristy kind of city. That's why you're getting all these answers you probably don't understand.

If you're going to a Rockets game and an Astros game, best stay somewhere downtown. Plenty of nice hotels downtown and lots to do. Be sure to cross the street if you see a bunch of homeless people, which you will. Definitely check out the museums. You can probably take the train to the Museum District if you can figure out how it works. Try to avoid doing this after dark. You'll have to drive to NASA but it's worth the visit if you're from out of town and you'll get to experience our wonderful and endless freeway traffic.

 

Right. It's a commercial/industrial city and it's ****ing massive so the distance between attractions is far. Staying downtown is the play to see the museums, zoo, pro sports and some good restaurants (although those are everywhere). Then you scoot out to NASA and back during non-peak driving times like 9:00AM-2:00PM

Cuisine I would target while in Houston:

• Tex-Mex ('Mexican' food)
• BBQ
• Gulf seafood
• Louisiana/Cajun
• Asian fusion

Places I would visit if I never lived here:

• Zoo
• Museums
• Sports
• NASA
• Galveston, if you've never been to the coast, there are far prettier beaches in the world otherwise. But the food is good and relatively cheap and The Strand is fun to visit. Good nightlife during tourist season, especially on the weekends.
• If you're so inclined, just drive Beltway 8 east over the ship channel to see the sprawl of chemical plants. It might not seem like an attraction to everyone but I've had people (engineers/scientists) ask to just drive there to see it all.

 

I haven't been to NASA in like 20 years.......I need to hit that up again, it's like Galveston, I know it's there but dam I have gotten lazy and selfish with my time on the weekends, I have no patience for traffic and crowds

Use common sense - areas that look more worn down are 95% of the time more dangerous.
