Secondly, you have to be able to memorize hundreds of frequencies, memorize and draw all the air route charts, maps of airports in the vicinity with acronyms, all the approach plates, memorize lost communication procedures, obstruction heights diagrams, and airfield diagrams, including runway and taxiway names and lengths, and much more. Then, you would have to be able to read the FAA handbook, and memorize hundreds of pages of rules, along with emergency procedures, weather procedures, helo procedures, and more. You have to be able to work under pressure, reacting at a moment's notice to safely separate aircraft, and recognize a situation that requires instant communication to prevent accidents. You have to be able to not only communicate with pilots, but ground and maintenance crews, emergency crews, weather personnel, other airports, flight planning personnel, and all positions in the tower and radar simultaneously. Again, only an idiot or malicious lying psycho would say that people with severe intellectual, physical, or psychiatric disabilities would ever qualify for that job. They are also required to not only have intense annual flight physicals, but anytime they may be too sick or stressed to work, they can be downed until clearing another flight physical to be deemed fit for duty.
The amount of pressure ATC controlers deal with in brief little spurts is insane. It's like juggling knives. They screen heavily for mental fitness.
