Ime needs to figure that out how Sengun, Jabari, Reed, and KD be better defenders

people always say defense can be taught and mostly effort and hustle

"people always say defense can be taught and mostly effort and hustle"

Actually I've only ever heard this from bad defensive coaches.

Defense takes months and years to improve. There's some instinctual and psychological elements of it you can almost never teach. Sengun and Jalen improved a lot under Udoka defensively but there's no one who believes they can be coached up to be as good as say Tari who was an excellent defender the day he started playing basketball for us. SGA could play MVP level offense but he still has the "it" factor, it's not a function of hustle or need or desperation. On defense, some people just have a certain "it" factor.

What I will say though is: you can say about any team that if you set a pick and get rid of the best defender, you have an dangerous matchup. No one is starting 5 guys who can guard Jamal Murray well, never mind SGA. Hell, no one is starting even 4 guys who can do that. You can always get the switch you want in this NBA.

Finally: replace Jabari with Tari and suddenly it's not such a big problem. I'm happy for Tari to be switched onto Edwards, I'm not happy for Jabari at his size and height to have that task. In this lineup, Durant takes Bari's role of providing some blocks from the weak side and he starts becoming an asset defensively (which is awesome because he's usually hidden on a bad offensive player). Amen, Tari, Durant, Sengun, Sheppard coached by Ime and backed up by Bari, Okogie, Capela definitely has a chance of being a top 10 defense. That's the threshold, you don't need a higher than top 10 to be a title contender. We definitely need better shooting, half court offense and TS% to be a title contender.

I was just about to ask you to summarize because I was listening in and it sounded downright stupid and I thought I misheard

Who the fck says this? Did he say this with Tari or any other players being put in the starting lineup?

At this point we're likely too late in the game the change this teams course.

However it has been patently obvious to anybody who paid attention that Reed's skillset is the only one that has a chance to do that. Amen isn't gonna learn how to shoot mid season, Jabari and Eason aren't gonna learn how to handle the ball. Even with his shortcomings, Reed can do both and is at a point in his career where game to game growth is more pronounced.

This special ed offense he kept running out there was embarrassing. The first Lakers loss was a fireable offense all by itself.

Not at all, and would be shocked, no one has mentioned him even at practice.

My personal feeling is that on-ball defense is hard to improve significantly at (not impossible, just harder) but team defense can be taught/schemed if a player is willing and plays hard.

I think that’s fair. I’d just add that if you physically can’t combat a below average physicality in the NBA, then nothing will really matter. The NBA is brutal and players will just run hard and physically at you and there’s not much you can do about it but foul.

The one simple move that will save this man’s coaching career and he’s still ginger about it.

OP forgot to include option for "5-months after I start this freaking thread!"

I was out with fam when game started, but saw they were starting Reed. That hustle block was a highlight play, but he helped get us off to a better start than before. Tari is just better off the bench and maybe he's finally figuring a way out of his slump.

    Over the last 13 games:
    • Reed leads the entire league in 4th Q minutes
    • Has played 32 mpg
    • Is 5th on Rockets in Clutch minutes (starter minutes)
    • Hell, for the entire year, he’s 5th in 4th Q minutes for the Rockets (starter minutes)
But, yeah, Coach hates him unless he starts :D

Nice try spamming this crap in multiple threads, maybe scroll up and look at the context?

If you deny Udoka doesn’t like Reed I have a bridge to sell you.

during this period he has been the joke of the entire NBA fo the offense he runs and inability for the rockets to take or make 3s. Even then he starts folks like DFS and tari. When Reed has a 9-2 record starting he can’t even give it a positive spin, has to say it’s a trial. Almost like that’s the case with every player and this team isn’t dead last in offensive efficiency

Is there anything significant for the last 13 games? Or does that just help your argument? Not like the anemic offense has only been happening 13 games.

4th quarter minutes for the year isn’t necessarily indicative of ‘starter minutes’ either and also isn’t the issue. The issue is the starting unit without Reed struggles to move the ball and initiate offense, something Reed helps remedy. Is he the savior of the offense? No, and it’s silly to expect a 2nd year guard to be. Also not what posters calling for more Reed minutes are saying. Simply that the offense functions better when they have a guard who can actually probe the defense off the dribble and make a pass. Not to mention he’s the best guard operating out of the PnR. Defense’s have also been keying in on him more, blitzing off the screen. He needs to improve on how he handles this as well, but that only comes with more minutes and reps.

All of this could’ve been figured out last year and earlier this year, but we had to fight for an inflated playoff standing last year despite knowing it ultimately wouldn’t matter.
