I don’t think Israel would have the political influence they have right now for years. Trump’s disastrous first year may cause republicans to lose power by the midterms. So Israel rolled the dice and struck now even though we are not prepared.

There is a very real perspective that he was old and approaching death anyway. Had he been allowed to die naturally, there might've been a reformer (within the Iranian context) installed in his place. Iran was certainly moving that way: the vast majority of the population was born after the revolution and was deeply frustrated with the regime's insistence on funding terrorism and going out of its way to be a pariah. There were slow, but steady, gains toward better treatment for women. The revolutionary fervor of 1979 was gone and the remaining old guard was forced to act rationally due to demographics and time.

That's all gone now after Trump and Bibi turned Khamenei into a martyr and killed people like Ali Larijani. The old guard will entrench itself, dissent will be crushed, and any slow reform will be impossible.
