The US tried the surge in 07–08 (yes, mostly military). It delayed the outcome, but the problem was largely structural, starting with local buy-in and a social foundation that was anti-American. You can’t solve that until there’s a social and political foundation aligned with your goals, and there was no line-of-sight to that. You would be constantly fighting insurgency and interference from other states (Iran, Syria, etc.). The strain of those fights would eventually erode support at home, which is exactly what happened. Success is possible, but it would probably require a military occupation of at least 50 years or longer. We would bleed dry on our treasury doing that, not to mention the American lives lost. It just wasn’t realistic.

A much better alternative is to help the locals build a vibrant and successful economy, even if it doesn’t fully reflect Western values. I believe that eventually, prosperous people will progress toward values more aligned with the West or better humane conditions. Force only works temporarily and is not a viable long-term solution.

Because Iran is indiscriminately bombing civilian targets all over the middle east (not just Israel) and sinking cargo ships who do not comply.

I don't have any reason to believe they were close to building a nuclear weapon. That said, I haven't been following the quality of refined materials Iran possessed. Perhaps we should let them develop a very small dirty bomb and let them hit Israel with it, creating a world conflict.

It would be nice if the Iranians as a whole would step up, but again, I am not an expert on this subject like some people here. Im not sure we will ever see that. Its similar to eastern Europe where everyone is more concerned with their sovereignty than creating governments and systems that benefit all. It seems odd people choose their own ideology (which i associate to their own personal hell) than work together to create a heaven.

Just like the United States? Why are you the moral authority on what Israel should and shouldn't do?

The majority of Iraq was not anti-American at the onset of the war, especially in the cities. I had family living there then (still do). The problem was that the USA destroyed the infrastructure and actual buildings. They then promised to rebuild it and largely never did. They also did not include the local people in a lot of the decisions, and they did not understand the faction in Iraq - many of which were not hostile to each other. They also failed to get food and supplies to those in Southern Iraq.

I agree support in the USA eroded, which is why I said you don't go in unless you are there for the long haul.

The sad thing is that the youngest generations in Iraq in the larger cities were actually mostly adoptive or or supportive of a lot of the things that the USA brought in -- and then we just left, and many of these young people were killed and murdered.

I will never forgive the US government for how they handled Iraq.

Your argument is better suited to Israel than to Iran.

But neither side is actually indiscriminately bombing civilian targets. That is not how they frame their operations. Iran claims it is aiming at military and strategic infrastructure. In reality, many of the missiles and drones it has launched across the Gulf region have hit airports, energy and transport infrastructure, and even residential areas, causing civilian deaths and damage beyond strictly military objectives. We all know well what is happening in Gaza and how that blurs the line between combatants and civilians.

However, just because Iran and Israel are acting this way does not mean they would use nuclear / dirty bomb weapons. See Putin Russia as an example.

I don't think that means that they intended to use a nuclear weapon. They are attacking the Gulf States and other areas because they have cells all over the region and want to cause harm and put pressure on the USA to withdraw.

I appreciate you saying you don't know - I don't know either, I can only go on what history shows.

I think that there are a lot of people in Iran that would like to have a different government - but from their perspective, they are being attacked by Israel and the USA - which makes it difficult to protest, and they also risk being murdered by the current government if they speak out. Plus, it is going on 50 years that this government has been in power, some older people are just used to it.

Things like this are not black or white like some think.

I don't support the decision made - but there will be good and bad that come out of it, like most conflicts. I think that China will ultimately be a loser in this scenario if the US is able to topple the government. I think for now, it is good for Russia, but that can change. I think it is at this point bad for the President and possibly the military. I think it is good for Israel and likely Iraq.

Israel should do whatever the **** they want to.

If Israel wants another country to assist them, Israel must respect any conditions the other country requests.

Trump asked that the energy infrastructure not be bombed. Israel ignored the request. Trump if he was not the biggest ****ing p***y on the planet should see to it that there will be onsequences.

You can't tell me BiBi doesn't have something on trump.......I mean I know he loves his dictators and all and BiBi is crooked as all get out, but trump lets Bibi walk all over him (and us in the process).....................its worse with Putin, I`ve never seen him be this big of a cuck

I am not super religious, but I do believe and I don't think the Good Lord would approve of these 2 idiots "rallying" for Israel the way they are going about it, killing your fellow humans is probably a big NO-NO for JC
