Because he's still shooting 38.7% from 3 which is 3rd best on the team (really 2nd best considering Okogie takes 3x LESS 3s than Reed). Would it help you if he shot a consistent 38%-40% every game rather than having to use any type of context with averages?
There needs to be a level of trust for coaches to start or play a player. This means players must earn playing time. This would only be meritorious and handing a title or position to a player without the player showing they are capable of the responsibilities is negligent of a head coach and fosters entitlement. Besides, Handing a player a starting position doesn’t mean that player will perform well in that role. Wood and KPJ were given bigger roles and they both weren’t starting level players. JG was given big minutes and a starting role but that didn’t solve his consistency issues. Sheppard did nothing to earn a starting pg role at the beginning of the season. Had a poor rookie year and poor summer league. In college he was a combo guard but most of the playmaking and point duties was done by Dillngham. Shepard still isn’t a point and the Rockets don’t have a pure point on their team. Most of the lineups Sheppard is in is with Amen, another combo guard. Starting isn’t important and players are on the bench to balance lineups. If Sheppard starts that would mean Holliday plays in that second unit. Sheppard anchors the second unit and still plays big minutes. If Sheppard continues to improve in terms of passing, defense, and shooting then sure. These things take time to develop. That’s why they call it player development
That doesn’t answer my question why he gets a pass from fans when his shooting has been inconsistent and poor in stretches of games. He had a hot start of a month and a half or so then 33% for Jan and 32% for MAR. And since late DEC to mid FEB was very inconsistent. Very few people talk about his inconsistency in shooting. You combine this with the turnovers and decision making and defensive issues. Is this a player that should start? Again I believe he is being developed every day that’s why he’s getting big minutes and allowed to play. He has improved in some things but highly inconsistent and disappointing to me in his shooting as he’s a boom or bust type player. Some games shooting 70% then giving you 0% to 18% for a stretch of 4-5 games so forth. let’s put on the objective lens here and be reasonable
I’m with you on the lack of objectivity concerning Reed, but there are legit reasons to start him. At this point in the season, it is a reasonable observation that playoff seeding really will have no measurable positive effect on our ability to compete for a championship. There could be some information gleamed from having Reed playing more with the starters and developing synergies with his likely backcourt mate next year. The more minutes Reed can share with the starting unit, the more information the team will have in revamping the offense and/or roster next year. Some might say this is a defeatist attitude, but I see it more as a focus on our goal of winning a championship, rather than a short term feel good goal of maximizing regular season wins. It’s a tough ask of Ime, but it’s not much different than asking a coach to tank for the long term good of the team.
Starting over tari 2 ppg or whatever dumbass play should be a given but we don’t even do that Even worse is an understatement , Amen is shooting many fold better from 3 than tari in march. Should tell you everything. Sheppard has the most hypercritical treatment in the league despite the numbers, that’s why fans tend to give him more of a pass he was 5/11 from the field yesterday in an offensive scheme (do I need to say more after watching the 4th) where he stood in a corner open most of the time while KD iso or turnover it over. He missed a couple of open 3s but 2 were grenades from the aforementioned. young players like that need flow and to settle in, that’s why he plays much better in the starting unit. Contrary to what people think I’m going g to say or are saying he was terrible on D yesterday. People tend to focus on blow bys etc which is more channeling to the help defender, it’s more highlight worthy but not as important for team defense. Last night his rotations were awful. A lot of this again had to with Dickerson who doesn’t rotate or cover his man. Ime layed into him for the LeBron dunk to where Katie should have gone under the screen. his defense was not good yesterday, but his offense was ok, and yes ye gets a pass when you look at the dogshit they put onto the court every night without consequence
What really ****ing sucks is we still could have utilized this year for data on players to try and ascertain their future. Honestly though, with Ime as head coach, I'm not sure any of it matters. Rotations are garbage, offensive scheme is (almost) non existent. Just feels like a complete waste of a year overall.
Tari isn’t a point guard. He is a 3 or 4 in lineups. He is a switchable defender who can defend 1-4. He gives you rebounds and can dribble drive on kick outs. Or attack the paint at certain angles giving us another dimension. Yes his shooting has been terrible but at least he gives you these things
No you just have an articulation problem and can’t relay your thoughts in writing then took offense and was triggered by writing a piece of shi+ response. Your response made little sense and you likely did poorly on the verbal part of your SAT. A player plays poorly and has been inconsistent yet still praised, gets a pass, little to no criticism and demands for a starting job. The answer? Because he shoots 38%. You’re Stupid.
I have been saying all along in terms of Sheppard’s fit with this team that is trying to win now. It doesn’t make sense to keep, give heavy minutes to, and develop a player knowing he will make several mistakes when your objective is to win a championship. I believe Sheppard will be a productive bench player and can be very good but it would take years of development. But maybe that’s what their approach has been? To play him and see what he can do? If he becomes productive and has potential to be good then at least he can be used next year or as a piece in a deal. People don’t realize how patient the coaching staff has been with Sheppard (3 straight TO’s giving away 7 straight points etc) Who else does this and not get yanked out the game? Many of you don’t want to acknowledge these things and see what you want to see.
I get your point, but Tari starting is not working, so shouldn’t the coach try somebody else? If not Reed, Okogie? You seem to absolutely absolve Ime of any responsibility in this team’s offensive issues. Seems like a lack of objectivity to me.
Reed should be option number 1 on this team - and until that happens we will struggle, he should be hunting his shot every second he is on the floor and if he finds something better he passes. I want 20+ shots out of Reed per game. DD
I think Reed absolutely needs more on ball reps and should be hunting his shot more but I don't believe he should be taking away from his normal play to do it. Reed more often then not makes the right read and play. If that play is passing up a semi contested shot of his for a more open shot, even though that player arguably shoots worse, I don't fault him. On a better constructed team (one that we hopefully have down the road with Reed), that's the correct pass that (I believe) he should continue making. It's absolutely infuriating him being in the game and not initiating the offense though. KD and Amen should never be bringing the ball up when Reed is in the game.
Not at all. I never said to not try Okogie again. I have questioned his rotations before but my contention has always been that this roster has a lot of deficiencies and limitations and fans who constantly bi*ch about Udoka is pointless. As I said no coaching can make this roster a champions. None.
