Haven’t read specifically anywhere for these people that hate Udoka, how they would run this offense with this specific current roster. What style? What kinds of offensive sets? What rotations? How would you use these players? Where would you place them on the court? More offball screens isn’t explaining how to run an offense. More reed sheppard or less iso isn’t it either.
Nope. You cant blame the roster when theses are the players he hand picked. Who's fault is it that he only likes to play low volume bad shooters? Or constantly putting the ball in the hands of turnover prone wings and centers instead of playing a traditional lineup with multiple guards? What does it say about him when he is struggling but these are the players he is comfortable with How about you say what you think he is actually GOOD at? Because with the amount of defenders weve given him I dont think there is a coach in the league that wouldnt have us at a top defense
If we had a competent coach we'd.... Have at least one guard on the court at all times Actually run some form of offense Have no more than 2 non shooters on the court at any given time Play more than an 8 man rotation in a back to back in Denver Not think Kevin Durant was a guard Not think Amen Thompson was a guard Not think Tari Eason was a guard Not think Tari Eason was a starter Be capable of making positive halftime adjustments Stop seeing what works then never doing it again Not have teams running the same play successfully against us 15 times in a row. This is not an exhaustive list... just a few things off the top of my head.
I think the roster is just as much of a problem as Ime’s flaws, probably more. But I do believe Ime had a ton to do with roster construction. I’m worried that dynamic is going to be a real problem going forward.
I'd like to hear others on this, but my main thought is that Ime is constantly talking about "attention to detail." A lot of his coaching seems to be focused on details. I'm getting a sense that 1) he needs somebody who's *not* focused on details, i.e. focused more on how the players fit together (to run an offense, especially) and 2) to make space for that, he needs to let go. Attention to detail can become control freakery. I'd like to have that person, presumably an assistant coach, review game videos and assess which of our guys fit best, or much at all, with other guys. There's so much confusion right now about who's supposed to be where and how we're gonna get a bucket in 24 seconds. One obvious question on the table is whether Sengun's inside game, KD's midrange game, and Reed's long-range game fit together. That becomes a roster decision, and it's not clear to me that Ime, much as I like him for other reasons, is the guy to figure it out.
FWIW, Hollinger and Duncan recently did an NBA coach ranking and had Ime as part of a tier of coaches in the 6-10 range. I think they both had him at 9 officially but effectively in a class of all somewhat similarly impactful coaches. Could Udoka be better? 100%. I just don't think firing our coach helps this team in the short or long term unless there is a known quantity out there waiting in the wings. This team is maddening for sure, but I don't think what we are experiencing is a specific coaching issue so much as a poorly constructed roster starting to be figured out by the league at large - more and more teams are figuring it out. I'll again point to Stone's continued insistence on BPA to establish roster value in the draft which has been somewhat of a success(albeit we never had access to the game changing talent)....we got valuable players but they don't fit, some are redundant, etc....that roster value is only worth something if you are willing to cash it in for something else and Stone has largely not been willing to make big swings here. You gotta turn those guys into a cohesive team and so far most of Stone's bets haven't worked out as a GM - - DFS contract has looked awful ($12.7mil) - Capela's signing hasn't really been of great value ($6.7mil) - Extending TWO aging player(Fred and Stevo) and them losing both for the year are bad luck but also that's $40mil on two aging players with legit injury histories. (Fred $25mil, Stevo $14mil) To put it another way, Stone spent $110mil on salary this year supplementing his young "core" on KD, Fred, Stevo, DFS, and Clint and $55mil of that has been completely unhelpful to the roster heading into the playoffs. This is the point ^^^^^ we need to talking about - **** the coaching.
As someone who is not from Turkey and completely out on Ime, this is one of the dumbest things I’ve read here and considering this is CF that’s a pretty low bar.
lol had to stop at Imes a good coach. That moron doesn’t know how to call timeouts when the other team is making a run. Plays only 8 guys and has no clue how to adjust on the fly.
Good point. Ime seems to be the kind of guy who thinks if all the little things are done right, the whole will be right. It's like fighting a war without the satellite view of the whole layout. That's medieval warfare. Seeing the details without having a good grasp of the big picture is supposed to be suitable for assistant jobs, not the head job. I think I saw somewhere that said Ime would be a great defensive coordinator but not a head coach. In fact, I actually doubt that a good offensive assistant would do any good if Ime is not willing to let go of his overall perspective of the game. He also doesn't seem to be a good tactical coach. Is he willing to let an assistant call plays and make lineup decisions?
ime aint perfect - but he aint as bad CF makes him out to be... The funny part is... most of folks major complaints are identical to MDA - and most folks just thought he was the greatest... stubbornness regarding his gameplan, inordinate focus on one end of the court while disregarding the other, short one end of the court rotations, iso happy gameplan, few in game adjustments.... sounds like both of em to me....
Amen is already a starter on a Championship team - he isn't really the problem. His shooting will probably keep him from being a genuine star unless it improves -but it could improve. Amen is arguably the Rockets best draft decision.
Sorry but Temu Thibs, Asus Adleman, or Cricket Carlisle ain’t doing it for me. We too cheap to get the real deal.
