It declined to review it based on what Moderna compared it to in testing, even though that testing plan had already been discussed with FDA regulators. That is unusual, since new vaccines are normally compared to existing approved ones, and the same application is being reviewed in Europe, Canada, and Australia. This is happening under leadership where Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been openly hostile to mRNA technology.

From a public health view, fewer vaccine options is a loss. mRNA flu shots are promising because they can be made faster and could improve on today’s often low-effectiveness seasonal vaccines, so declining to review them aligns more with anti-vaccine politics than with expanding tools to fight influenza.

RFK Jr.'s CDC just ran an unethical vaccine experiment on African babies to get the data he wanted

If you haven't seen the Rolling Stone investigation from yesterday, read it. Here's why it matters.

Kennedy allies at the CDC approved a $1.6 million grant in just 10 days (normal process takes up to a year) to study potential "harms" of the hepatitis B birth dose vaccine on over 14,000 infants in Guinea-Bissau, where 1 in 5 adults already has hepatitis B. Half those babies would be denied a vaccine that's proven for 30+ years to block mother-to-infant transmission.

The ethics approval they used to justify this? The local committee's US registration had been expired since 2018, they only had 4 members when federal rules require 5, and the approval letter was signed by someone who resigned from the committee 3 years ago and says his name was used without his knowledge.

No actual CDC scientists reviewed this. It was pushed through by two non-scientists, one of them a 24 year old former DOGE operative.

Oh, and three weeks after this grant was quietly approved, RFK Jr. dropped the CDC's universal recommendation for the hepatitis B vaccine for American kids. A Stanford infectious disease doctor said it plainly: they funded a study to generate doubt about a vaccine they had already decided to pull back.

The WHO objected formally. Congress demanded answers. Guinea-Bissau paused the study. The university listed as the grant recipient just opened an ethics investigation.

In a new report that outlines a dozen high-risk pollutants given new life thanks to weakened, delayed or rescinded regulations, the Environmental Protection Network (EPN), a nonprofit, nonpartisan group of hundreds of former Environmental Protection Agency staff, warns that the EPA under President Donald Trump has abandoned the agency’s core mission of protecting people and the environment from preventable toxic exposures.

Getting information from the EPA now is “like pulling teeth…It’s probably the least transparent EPA we’ve ever had.”

The list includes brain-damaging mercury and pesticides in food; hormone-bending phthalates in consumer products and cancer-causing PFAS “forever chemicals,” lead, arsenic, and trichloroethylene in drinking water. Also on the list are the carcinogens benzene, formaldehyde, and vinyl chloride in the air, along with heart- and lung-damaging soot and smog. All of these pollutants cause multiple health harms.

The list does not cover pollutants like greenhouse gases, which also exacerbate health harms, but is meant to illustrate the escalating health costs of Trump administration policy decisions.
