I think he is saying Miami wanted assurances that Clowney wasn't going to be a rental and that's why Clowney had to be told about it before it could be finalized. ???
Exactly. Im pretty sure any trade has to have him signed but we don't know if that Miami trade was always gonna be there. Miami was obviously willing to trade him, there could have been other offers
Not at all. Disputing that it was a “necessity” for BoB to tell Clowney he was going to be traded before he signed the tag. Players are kept in the dark and straight lied to all the time. It sucks for them but that’s the business.
The deadline for a long term deal had passed. No party in the deal could have given any assurances outside of a pinky promise. Even right in this instance, there is no assurance Clowney that him and Seattle will reach a long term deal.
If a team renigs on an assurance like no franchise tag, they would blow up any trust they would have with players/agents/union. They would not get free agents to sign there.
Agree but players do give assurances sometimes and team do seek it. Didn't Chris Paul and The Rockets do something similar? (My memory is a little fuzzy at the moment so just asking) Get or receive a "pinky promise" deal of an extension the following year before they traded for him? And with Seattle, that might be why they wanted the Texans to pay half his salary this year, less of a risk...?
Um. If the Texans would have done that, then the trust in the locker room would have gone out the window. There are certain things you don't do. If you want players to re-sign with you or sign as Free Agents, don't play dirty pool. You never hear team doing that with Franchise tags players. Teams may be shady in other areas, but not with Franchised players.
Morey telling Paul "they are not looking to trade him" while he was under contract is different trying to sneak a deal with a Franchised player who has to sign a tender to play that season.
They did it in this case actually. They did NOT tell Clowney about the desire to trade him when they discussed his reporting date with him.
He was informed before he was about to sign. They told him they wanted to trade him to Miami. He met with Brian Flores. Clowney came back and said he wanted to go to a playoff team.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I'm talking about when Rockets traded for CP3. (Rockets not wanted a one year rental and wanted that assurance he would sign an ext.) and Miami trading for Clowney. That is likely what Flores discussed with him, their future plans
Yes, Morey made a handshake deal with CP3 and his Agent. The NBA is different. Those Agents represent many players. You screw that one Agent on a handshake deal (especially a player who is the president of the players' association), it will hurt you in the future.
Like I said, that is completely irrelevant to whether BoB needed to tell him he’ll be dealt after he signs.
Right, this is all confusing but the timeline is important. The holdout was going on for a bit right? At one point Clowney told the team he was going to report on date X (I don't remember the date, but it was reported). Nothing was mentioned about a trade. Prior to that date, his agent got word that he was going to be traded to Miami if he signed his tender. OBrien was asked about this directly at a press conference and he refused to answer. The team then confirmed it to Clowney who then refused to report. The Texans allowed Miami to talk to him to try to persuade him to change his mind and he (smartly) refused still, in part because he was afraid Brian Flores would be like Obrien. At that point the Texans traded him to Seattle. But there was absolutely a time where they intended for Clowney to sign his tender and then blindside him with a trade to Miami. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Professional players, especially in the NFL, look out for themselves and their money first and foremost. Do you really think Watson would be contemplating his extension had BoB dealt Clowney for Tunsil without telling him first? How about Roby or even Tunsil himself? Notable FAs aren’t turning down lucrative deals with the Texans because BoB did what he had to do to get a franchise tackle. But yes you never hear that with franchise players because franchise players rarely get dealt in general. This year was somewhat of an exception but most teams don’t want to give up substantial assets to turn around and give out a giant contract. Talking about assurance that Clowney wouldn’t be a one year rental to whoever traded for him. Don’t think any party could or would have assured that.
No. I'm talking about pulling a sneaky deal on getting him to report and then trading him. I'm positive Clowney and his agent asked if he was being traded. That's why the Texans told him about the Miami trade. If they lied about it, that is what would break trust between agents/players and a team.
