Agreed! Clowney wasn't coming to training camp (common practice to avoid risk of injury when on a franchise deal) but notified the Texans (and us) that he would show up in about week 3 of preseason. I don't have proof but there are reports including one that suggests a disagreement with O'Brien about Clowney is one of the major reasons Gaine is no longer a Texan (source: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...n-signing-jadeveon-clowney-to-long-term-deal/). It makes perfect sense to have let him play one more season and see if they can work something out. If not, a trade was still possible and worst case is they get a 3rd round compensatory after having him play his butt off (contract year) for one more year.
They wanted a left tackle. They value that more than Clowney because its more valuable and was needed They didn't want to give up picks. After telling him they wanted to trade him they probably felt trading him was best for all parties to avoid conflict
There are a lot of players playing on the last year of their deal on this team. Yet no distraction. Clowney is one of the most distraction-free players. He doesn't say anything controversial. He stayed quiet from the media throughout his hold-out. He was not going to be a distraction; not any more than Bradley Roby or Whitney Mercilus was going to be.

There was nothing wrong with him telling Clowney about trade because it was necessary for the trade People are saying it was incompetent but it was necessary

There is no losing that way. He balls. Get a good trade or a compensatory pick. He flops. He is now available for a cheaper deal at the price which they offered him when they allegedly low-balled him.

It wasn't necessary for the trade. If signed the tender they could trade him. He wasn't going to sign the tender though when he knew they would trade him. What are you missing?
Miami wanted him signed. What are you missing? Who knows if that trade is still on the table after waiting?
And the player you get rid off is one of the ones that gets double teamed the most. Whatever. It's done. They made their decision. They botched the implementation and got less value but they got the result they wanted. They wanted him gone, he is gone. That is what I get most from the Bill O'Brien the GM. He is not getting the best value but he is getting good players.
Why was it necessary? Clowney even said he was about to sign the tag until BoB told him he was going to trade him right after. Get him signed and then do a deal. If he doesn't like it, that's Miami's problem. Players get traded all the time without being told anything, hell it is completely common for players to find out via Sports Center, twitter, etc...nowadays. That's the business...
